Well, dougie had a pretty loud, yet quiet offseason. However, I think today's move to resign braun for 5 years at 3.8 per is brilliant. Justin had a great year and has blossomed defensively into a legit top 4 defenseman and even could be a solid top pairing player to compliment a more aggressive partner, much like pickles. This move makes a ton of sense as well given the age and dollar amount. I like it...
They now have braun, pickles, Burns and demers signed for at least 2 years, and Mueller likely joining too. thats a nice core of the D signed for a while. If only they could add a single #1 dman to the list, then I'd feel a whole lot better, but nevertheless, this is a good move.
it also gives dougie great cap certainty going forward. Even if the cap stayed the same next year (which it wont), dougie would have 14.5+M remaining having his top 5 D signed (assuming Mueller makes the squad well) as well as all the forwards other than kennedy, desi, scott, and Sheppard. he could likely resign shep and desi at roughly 1 or 2M each and let kennedy and scott walk and have a full O crew signed (12 forwards) and still have some 12+M remaining on the cap. Yes, nemo will be a UFA but Stalock is signed and if he takes over the #1 job, then they will only need a backup goalie.
In other words, this signing gives dougie virtually a full set of forwards, D, and #1 goalie with many million remaining. I think this kind of flexibility, in addition to the 6M he has going into this year, implies a whole lot of wiggle room for wheeling and dealing midyear. I wonder if the rhetoric from the summer of shame wont bleed into the actual season, particularly if they get off to a slow start...
