Despite Brandon Boykin's play, he is not in consideration to start in the Steelers secondary

Reporter: "Has Boykin played his way into consideration to potentially start over Blake?"
Tomlin: "No"

:L

Knee-jerk reaction:
I shouldn't be complaining too much because Boykin is receiving the same amount of, usually more, snaps than Blake. Which is better than his 0-5 snaps per game he might have been getting before that. Tomlin is often quoted saying Blake "dominates the tackling category", but that is stupid. He has the most tackles out of the group because he is the most targeted out of the group. How can Tomlin justify that? I understand using Blake in short to go situations because he definitely is the most aggressive & physical CB on the roster. But when he is continuously abused EVERY time he's on the field, it's moronic to think that his play will get any better. Opposing quarterback specifically target Blake whenever he's on the field because they know he's the immediate weak spot. Something Tomlin is too dense to see.

Frustrating...

After some thought:
I hope what Tomlin is intending with these statements is that he simply wants to continue the CB rotation. Even though Blake is listed as the starter, we all know he isn't. He has been outsnapped by Boykin & Cockrell for 3 weeks now. The rotation really does keep everyone fresh and shows later in the game. I'd like to see them deploy the same personnel schemes from DEN in that they rotate Blake in early and then shut him down late in the game. If the pass rush can dial up more pressure in the 1st half then it would have looked entirely different last week. In essence, I wouldn't make too much of an overreaction to this. The formula has been working.

I've been wanting Tomlin to throw Boykin in since week 1. He hasn't been given a fair shot thus far, and I don't know why. It makes me think there's something behind the scenes that we fans don't know about. I'm no NFL coach, but I think Boykin is obviously better than Antwon Blake. Every game I find myself asking "why is 41 in the game?" He's honestly that bad. I'm done waiting for Boykin to start dominating the snap count at the slot corner position. I would keep Will Gay and Cockrell on the outside, rotating Blake in to give them rest, and have Boykin play the slot. If only Senquez Golson wasn't hurt.

The ONLY thing I can see here...Tomlin feels he's going to need Blake at some point this season and given there is really nobody with any experience behind Blake/Boykin...Anything happens to Gay, or Cockrell and we're back to Blake being the every down punching bag.

Those guys watch the tape...if Blake is on this squad next season...I will say then that Tomlin has lost his f------ mind!

They are saying when he went free agent, Tomlin told him he would be crazy not to try the free agent market and he wished him the best......

But never once said anything about him not being able to return.....
This whole thing just gets weirder and weirder!!!!

Yea I saw that. Not sure what to think of it. It certainly points to why the Steelers weren’t interested in re-signing Boykin. I don’t feel, however, that is why he wasn’t playing. Hip condition or not, if the guy can play now, play him. He clearly upgraded the secondary when he was in there.

I'm curious if the hip limited his conditioning. As in, did it hinder his endurance?

It's a shame, great player and he did elevate our DBs. Seems no one in the NFL wants to touch him now!!!
