More like two 3-4 teams at this rate.

But I agree. Keep the big boys, top 10 or so, and call it good.

In a normal year, a conference may have something like 10 bowl tie-ins. If they can't fill all 10 with .500 or better teams then the bowl can pick anyone. Opens up more lower level conference spots.

This year there is no .500 requirement AND bowls are contracting. Less seats at the table and the first ones will go to the P5 conference alignments. Lower level conferences may be left out in the cold.

Actually, the standard requirement was 6 wins, with at least 5 of those wins coming against FBS opponents. The .500 requirement was sometimes overlooked if a team was 6-6 & then lost in their conference championship game. If not enough .500 or better teams were available, then 5-7 teams were allowed to participate based on their Academic Progress Ratings.

Just about all of the non-power conferences have at least 3 bowl tie-ins, so they won't be left out in the cold. BYU sometimes has a bowl tie-in, and so does Army (the Cadets have already accepted the season's first bowl invite). Liberty has generated enough publicity this year that they are not likely to get overlooked - even if they lose this weekend's showdown with Coastal Carolina.
