Game 1: Detroit vs Boston

Can the young kids outplay the veterans on Thursday night? Will Franzen get something going from the get-go or will he look like the dinosaur that he appeared to be this preseason? Can Jimmy improve on the technical aspects of his game this season, especially on improving his lateral movement from post to post, or will those aggravating physical issues return to haunt him once again? Can Gus repeat what he did last season to rescue the day when Jimmy's game headed for the dumpster? How many games will Z be healthy this season - how many games into the season will some opponent run him onto the IR, and, will that first line be more productive with Franzen on it than the second line can be? How many games will it take for Nyquist to be moved up from the third line and Abdelkader moved down from the first line? What will be the structure of the lines when Pavel gets back? How many games will we have to struggle before Kindl and Lashoff get moved for 2 of the better dmen in GR?

Yes. They've already proven they can. Will they?... TBD

Will Franzen get something going from the get-go or will he look like the dinosaur that he appeared to be this preseason?

Franzen will net his 20 goals. Five of them will come against the Ottawa Senators. He'll pot seven in a six-game stretch with a hat trick mixed in there. He'll pot four in a three-game stretch. The rest of the season he'll be a wasted roster spot.

Can Jimmy improve on the technical aspects of his game this season, especially on improving his lateral movement from post to post, or will those aggravating physical issues return to haunt him once again?

Jimmy will have a bounce-back year and show everyone that last year was the anomaly, not the year before when he was a top ten goalie in wins, S% and GAA.

Can Gus repeat what he did last season to rescue the day when Jimmy's game headed for the dumpster?

Gus will be good, but will not put up the numbers he did last year. Watch out for Jurco to take that next step in the scoring department this year. Jimmy will be fine this year; credit more stability and experience on the back-end as much as a turn-around in his own game.

How many games will Z be healthy this season - how many games into the season will some opponent run him onto the IR, and, will that first line be more productive with Franzen on it than the second line can be?

Dats & Z will miss games. Hopefully not more than 10 each.

Franzen will probably spend time on all four lines throughout the season because the guy is so streaky. Babcock is a line tinkerer and won't hesitate to switch things up game-to-game and shift-to-shift. Injuries will also dictate the lines to an extent.

How many games will it take for Nyquist to be moved up from the third line and Abdelkader moved down from the first line?

Maybe as soon as the first game. Datsyuk is the one who likes Abby on the first line and Dats isn't in the lineup against the B's.

What will be the structure of the lines when Pavel gets back?

Again, they change game-to-game. I'd expect Dats to center the top line with Z on one wing. What I'm hoping for is Babs to keep that Tatar-Sheahan-Jurco line intact. That line seems to generate scoring chances with their hustle and hard work every time they step on the ice.

How many games will we have to struggle before Kindl and Lashoff get moved for 2 of the better dmen in GR?

Yeah, I'm watching those two guys closely too. Here's to also hoping we don't have to endure another terrible start by Quincey and more boneheaded defensive zone turnovers by Smith. My gut says we'll get solid seasons out of Kronwall, DeKeyser, Ericsson, Smith and Quincey this year, but that last D-man is the great unknown. Would've loved to see Jensen, Sproul or Marchenko take that next step and outplay both Kindl and Lashoff for that last D spot. ...Still got all lefties on the blueline.
