Just the casting choices alone felt like this would bomb

Yep. Hated the idea from rip... or at least their execution of the idea

I am not sure the IP has ANY broad appeal to the masses. While it was a successful game franchise, it always struck me as a very niche market.

Fair point. I only finished one of the games (years ago, so I don’t even remember which one), so I have no attachment to the lore. But if the producers don’t respect the lore, AND the concept is niche to begin with, than who is your target demo?

This is why Fallout did so well. It respected the lore AND the ip had broader appeal. Pretty much perfectly done.

Haven't watched the movie but seems like they went campy/goofy rather than the direction I'd have went with it. Would have also went with Handsome Jack as the villain.

Had they taken a more serious tone (and not included Tina as a semi main character) I think it could've had more legs.

Again, not a huge Borderlands game wonk, but I always got the sense the game was pretty thick in “camp”. I don’t think holding on to that aspect was necessarily a bad move.

I am speaking abstractly. I have never been interested in seeing this movie, and never even watched any of the trailers. As I said, I begrudgingly finished one of the games, and while it was fun (enough), it wasn’t near good enough to grab me for future versions.

I wonder how long the very concept of “movies” will continue to exist. Doing 6-10 episode “seasons” (I am beginning to like the British term “series” better in this context) seems to be a better format.

I agree with this 90% of the time but Borderlands could totally be done in a 2 hour movie.

First thoughts on casting:

Jack Black as Marcus the crooked businessman and narrator
Kevin Hart as the Villain that talks crap over the radio, leader of a rival group searching for the vault.

Make it a cross between Mad Max and Cannonball Run. It could be done right in a couple of hours.
