The 49ers have signed Alex Boone to a four-year contract extension, keeping the 24-year-old backup offensive tackle in San Francisco through the 2015 season.

Boone, who has lost about 40 pounds since he signed with the Niners as an undrafted free agent in 2009, has played on special teams and short-yardage situations as an extra blocker this season. He's also stayed out of trouble off the field during his NFL career after he had a DUI and public-intoxication arrest at Ohio State, where he was an All-American as a senior.

"We are very pleased with the progress that Alex has made since joining the team in 2009," San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. "He really is a great example of what hard work, dedication and focus can do to further a young player's career. The 49ers are very happy for Alex and look forward to him capitalizing on this opportunity."

According to NFL Network, Boone (6-8, 300 pounds), who was signed through this season, received a $1.7 million signing bonus. He will make $450,000 in 2012, $540,000 in 2013, $950,000 in 2014 and $1.2 million in 2015.

sounds like a great move to me. Cheap deal and quality contract for a young player with room to grow.

Also of interest, the 9ers have offered a number of other 49ers contract extensions as well but they have been turned down. Grant, Brooks, Synder, and Spillman have all turned down extensions.

also delanie and RJF have turned down deals, according to Barrows.

Lot of rejected contracts I guess. Maybe were just trying to low ball some of the players. Is a little concerning though that some of these backups are rejecting deals.

I know Smith, Edwards, Goldson, Rodgers, and Grant were signed to one year deals. Anyone else get a one year deal this year?

I hope next offseason the team is good at picking players to sign to one year deals as they were this year. There is no motivation like playing for a new contract.

Delaine could be a starting TE elsewhere, i think he knows that. Got another year left on him anyways.

I wouldn't be upset if we lost Delanie Walker. He has been valuable, but i think we could find a guy in round 3 or so (maybe one of the guys from Stanford) that could fill in nicely. I wouldn't want to over pay for Walker by any means.

Great deal for Boone, though. Another great executive move.

I remember how good Boone was at Ohio St. He was once considered a first round pick. I'm glad he's got the drinking under control. I'm hoping he could become our rt, while sliding Davis over to play rg for us next season. If Boone progresses to that point we'll be in for another very good draft. We'd be able to focus on fs, cb, olb,wr, Isaiah Pead (3rd down back) and depth in the trenches.

My only issue with losing Walker is that we then HAVE to replace him with someone that can do the same things. He's not the best player on our offense, really is far from it, but he's one of the most important because of the skill set he brings.

If we lose him we NEED to bring in someone that can do the same things as a blocker, a receiver and a runner. We can get that in the 3rd, but the 3rd round is a point where there are still guys that can contribute early at a variety of positions. If we keep Walker, that 3rd round pick could be a RG, a DL for the rotation, a WR or a safety.

Any of those positions, with third round value, improve the overall team. If we lose Walker, we're drafting to maintain the status quo.
