The amount of money he makes has nothing to do with this. He is making market rate for his profession. You make the market rate for yours.

So if you've missed a day at work with a head cold it's hypocritical to think Geno Atkins should try to tough it out on a Sunday when he has the sniffles?

For me, they're not the same thing and the salary is a part of it.

I can't wait to look at some of the posts I'll be reading this season in a new light though

Your hypothetical is flawed. You're assuming Atkins' job only matters once a week. Sunday is the most important day of the week for Atkins, no doubt. If you or I had a presentation with a customer or the Sr. Mgmt of your company, something that may come around 15 or so times a year, I would be at work, even if I weren't feeling well.

Exactly right. Salary has nothing to do with it.

So it's not a matter of the time after your child being some sacred experience and everyone being entitled to the same allotment of paternity leave regardless of their salary without criticism.

The idea is that baseball players play 162 days a year and they can miss a couple if a situation arises.

I disagree with that, but at least it's better than everyone moralizing on their sopabox.

Which one is being argued?

No doubt this plays a role. A baseball player missing two games at the beginning of the season is not a big deal -- It wouldn't be a big deal if the player claimed they were fatigued or any other reason.

It's true that things are a little different in football with only 16 games. For example, Philip Rivers travelled across the country to play a football game this season and said he accepted the fact that his overdue wife might go into labor at any time and that he wouldn't be there for the birth. BTW -- Rivers is a pretty big family guy (literally), so I don't think he was simply being callous about family issues. But one game as a qb can change an entire NFL season.

Both.

The birth - which really is the only thing people are "moralizing" about since that is the only thing Esiason could have been referring to given his mention of "C-section" - is a "sacred experience" and nobody should be obligated to miss it because of their job, especially given the 9 months notice.

And those hours and might I even says days after the baby is born are very precious as well, and you're only displaying your ignorance by suggesting it's just another day and someone should be obligated to rush back to work simply for the reason that they get paid a lot. Nobody should be required to. And they aren't. Nonetheless, those people with those jobs where others are relying on them (as ck mentioned: important meeting, football player where each game means a lot, etc) do many of the times make exceptions AFTER the birth and rush back to work. But not because they have to, rather out of the kindness of their hearts that they don't want to let others down.

Boomer, more than most, should understand the value of family & children. I think he's just being a doosh for the sake of being a doosh. From me & Shannon Sharpe, "F-you, Boomer!"

I don't give a fuck either way.

C-Section to have his kid early so he doesn't miss any games, or have the baby and take 6 months off to be with your new family.

Maybe while he is at it, he can get his wife a boob job so he has some fun bags to bat around from time to time. Take a month off for that too. Lord knows we all could use a little extra padding in our life.

I don't give a shit either way. Professional sports are a waste of f'n money.

Players should be paid on a performance basis only. You bat .150 on the year, you are gonna get paid jack shit. You hit the triple crown, you are going to make some serious damn bank. Got a problem with it, go dig ditched for a living Jack!

I am not saying give all t hat money to the owners either, the owners need to drop ticket prices back down to $20 bucks, give the tv companies a little bit of a break, which should then be passed on to the manufacturers who buy ad space, then if they don't pay so much, have that cost savings passed back on to the consumer like it should be. All the f'n inflated sports dollars only cost us more to see games, go to games, buy products.

Football too dangerous for anything less than millions of dollars? Then make the shit flag football for all I freaking care. Pass the savings back to me and my family though.

F professional sports, athletes and owners.

How'd I do?

Not bothering me really. Isn't this our typical offseason? I mean when was it ever any different?

I am used to it, just tired of the amount of money these grown babies make, how much it costs the team, what it does to tickets and tv contracts, which in turn affects product and service prices, which in turn affect all of us peons. Power to the peon I say. Down with the rich, steal it for the poor.

When Chad Johnson has a $10,000 budget a month just to feed himself, it makes me sick. Who the F can eat $120,000 a year in food?

Strong.

But the issue is with fans. Ticket prices, salaries, media rights - they're all market value based. People are willing to spend $60 a ticket, so teams will charge $60 a ticket. People drink $9 beers, they'll sell $9 beers. You watch 50 games on tv a year, the network will charge advertisers accordingly. The huge pockets of the owners means they're willing to spend more than other owners on players, driving up the player salary market. It is impossible to cut the money until fans stop attending or watching games - in all markets. Revenue sharing (or luxury tax depending on the sport) has ensured this.
