Right b/c of his 2nd round draft pick status. right?
like shark said, hood on the decline and murphy seems to play better rushing the QB vs dropping back in coverage. his age and contract work for him as well.Right b/c of his 2nd round draft pick status. right?

True but isn't a 3-4 De supposed to be run defenders. Hyping up a guy who has never played the position before is a bit pre mature. I just don't think he is a lock to make the team.
Actually Murphy played DE his entire career until we drafted him and converted him to an OLB.
He was not a 3-4 DE at Stanford.
Nope he was a 4-3 DE. But your statement was he had NEVER played the position of DE. Just reminding you he has. Quinton Dunbar had NEVER played corner at any level, but that worked out for us. Darrell Young came into the league as an ILB, yet became the best FB we have had on this team in a very long time.

Not a winner. 3-4 De and 4-3 De are two totally different things.
Winner, winner and winner Sharkman. 100% right.
I got this from cbs draft profile.
Critics will be quick to point out that Murphy was surrounded by a great deal of talent at Stanford and that while instinctive and physical, he's not particularly athletic. He starred at Stanford mostly at outside linebacker but surprised with a relatively undefined upper body at the Senior Bowl weigh-ins and was asked to drop down and play defensive end at the Senior Bowl, where his inexperience on the line showed.
Dean, he played both. Most teams in the NFL who run a 4-3 were looking at him as a DE, and teams like us were looking at him as an OLB. Thing you seem to miss or rather not value because it doesnt fit into what you want is... Murphy is versatile enough to make the switch. If he werent, the team likely would have left him at OLB considering that we will need more than 3 OLB on roster. They didnt make this move to try and "fit him in somewhere" so that they dont have to cut him.
Coming out of college he was too small to be an every down 4-3 DE. He had to move to OLb. Now we asked him to gain weight b/c he would not be a factor at OLB for us this year.
Now you just talking to hear your own voice. Coming out of college he was 6'6 265 lbs
Demarcus Ware one of the BEST DE's in the game over the past few years is 6'4" 258
I could give you a rundown list of guys who do very well as 4-3 DE's and there sizes if you really want to press this angle.
The team asked him to add some weight because we play a 3-4. But do you really think they would rather put him at risk of being cut by asking him to switch positions, rather than have him be a Backup OLB and special teamer??
