You are probably more experienced over there than I, but I find Grant pretty damn clever...not necessarily insightful, but clever. I never read the threads; it all seems to clubby to me and I'm not in on the joke. Or I am the joke.

Yeah, Grant's a talented writer no doubt. Sort of a Douglas Adams for the "Live in Mom's Basement" set. I just think this one was a clunker, and particularly, the "Bochy is an idiot" meme is way played out.

Well, most of it wasn't luck. When he would make random moves like rotate a new guy into the lineup that would drive in some big runs, that's not entirely Bochy.

hahaha ok, I misspoke. My point being that I think Bochy is either underrated or overrated by most people. All he can do is put his players in a position to succeed, the guy who he would ask to pinch hit that drove in a few runs (I can't think of a specific example) is the guy who deserves the credit for what he did.

Oh I'm not saying Bochy does not deserve criticism, but he's clearly not an idiot. At the same time, when we criticizes him we open ourselves up for a dose of criticism too. There's clearly logic behind what he does, and he's working with a ton more relevant information than any of us can hope to consider when we critique him.

In this case, I think Grant got lazy and tried to shoehorn an audience pleasing old meme into the current situation. He came off a little pompous and condescending, as if a 5' 5" real estate agent who never played the game beyond the eighth grade should decide what "tools" a guy who has managed 2500+ big league games should be allowed to use. And if that on the face of it isn't enough of a fail, he chose Rowand as the "stabtoaster" when he's actually out hitting most of the other regulars over the last month - largely due to how and when Bochy is using him. That's a big time fail in my book.

Such being the case, I think that we are arguing the exact same point here. Bochy is either underrated by people who assume he sucks based on seeing players they don't like in the lineup, or Bochy is overrated by people that only watched him in the playoffs last year and think that every decision he makes is right now.

Grant is funny...and that's about the extent of it. Like most internet journalists, (and more particularly sports journalists) he pretends to know more than he actually does.
