I mean, this is a great deal for Toronto, but what are the Padres getting out of this?

I don't understand what the Padres are doing. There was a lot of talk of a Melvin Upton for Ubaldo Jimenez deal with the Orioles. I mean...wtf is that??? Why were the Padres so desperate to get Upton off their team?

So I just had a post ready to go saying how the Jays' best prospects are all in A right now and had a small list of potentials. Then it ended up being a guy in rookie ball.

This...this I do not understand. Voodoo?

They want to clear roster spots for some of their young players in the minor leagues. Margot and Renfroe could both be part of the major league roster by the end of this season or start of next season and if Melvin was on the team then either they'd be bench players or Upton would be. Neither of those ideas makes sense, so they trade Upton while his value is high. That's also why they want to move Norris, to give Hedges a shot with how great he's been in AAA. The only thing I question is if they got the best return possible for Upton because multiple teams were interested, paying the money is okay because it doesn't really change the outlook for 2017.

I knew he'd be traded, don't feel too good about the return though. Is this the best prospect they could get from any of the 3 teams that wanted Upton?

Upton's really turned it around in San Diego after two sub-replacement level seasons in Atlanta. He batted .257/.313/.435 (104 OPS+) in 179 games in San Diego. Not great by any means, but it's in line with what he did in Tampa (.255/.336/.422, 105 OPS+). He batted .198/.279/.314 (66 OPS+) in Atlanta.

Was watching part of the Padres-Jays game earlier tonight...Upton came up in the 7th to tremendous applause...probably because they all knew he was basically playing for free

Rodriguez is 19 & has a fastball that's been clocked as high as 98MPH. If things don't work as a starter they can move him to the bullpen. He needs to work on his secondary pitches. Dickerson has been on fire & the Padres have depth in the OF in the system. I wasn't happy about all the trades last offseason because I didn't believe the Padres were contenders. However, the Padres have signed a lot of International talent as of July 2nd.
