He has one year left on his deal and we could always tag him after that.

The number for wide receivers right now is 10 million. And that could go up next offseason. And if the team doesn't get a long-term deal done that offseason, he's as good as gone.

Signing Mike Wallace makes a ton more sense. The Niners already have LMJ as the speed guy out of the backfield, and he & Wallace don't have the injury problems.

I'm not entirely against the concept of trading for Harvin, but I think the Niners are in a good enough position that they don't have to take that big of a gambe.

And trading for him without signing him to a long-term deal is not a good idea IMO.

You slap the tag on him and he goes nowhere. He gets paid what he would presumably be worth on the open market but for just one year. You get a 2 year evaluation period without committing long term money.

But after that, he's as good as gone. That's my point. And Crabtree is going to be a FA after this season as well.

Meanwhile, the Niners could lock up Wallace to a 5 year deal without trading anything, and the WR position is no longer a problem for a long time.

It also means they can't use the tag on anyone else like Justin Smith.

2 years of Crabs, Wallace, and Harvin would be insane.

Yikes! Yes, that could be a possiblity. Sign Wallace and rent Harvin for a season. Seems like overkill though. With Vernon (and possibly Walker), the Niners don't really need 3 good WRs, especially considering the fact that they're best when they run the ball a lot.

I'd rather spend the draft pick(s) & money on other positions. Wallace & Crabby would be enough to make the Niners have a top 3 offense in the NFL (especially if they upgraded the C position).

We also need to trade for Odrick so we don't have to spend an early pick there.

If we could do it for a 3rd I see this as a no brainer as well. Before the injury he was being talked about as an MVP candidate.

Yup!! People seem to have a very short term memory!!

We actually have 3 third round picks too (one of which I believe is a comp pick). It's not like we would be losing much but giving up the Carolina pick (3rd round pick).

If we address the WR position with Percy, we could cut Mario to have extra $ for '13 salary cap.
1st round pick: NT/DE (the better player of the two)
2nd round pick: CB (Poyer/Amerson/Trufant/Blid Wreh-Wilson)
3rd round pick: Percy Harvin
3rd round pick: NT/DE (the position we didn't address between the 2 positions in round 1)
4th round pick: Tyran Mathieu
5th round pick: Robert Alford
5th round pick: C/OG
6th round pick: Marques Wilson or best WR available
6th round pick: k
7th round pick: Greg Reid our punt returner
7th round pick: OLB
7th round pick: RB
7th round pick: ILB

You forgot trading for Jared Odrick, which should be the #1 priority this offseason.

Way to high for him. He is a PR/KR specialist at best in the NFL. I don't think he can even make a good Nickel Corner because of his size disadvantage. Other teams will just match him up against their biggest most physical receiver and bully him.

No chance Alford drops to the 5th. I'm hearing as high as 2nd round now.

No chance he drops below the 4th. His return ability and play making ability are too high. Caused too many turnovers and makes too many big plays.

Lets not forget how high Hester was drafted as nothing more than a return specialist.

Are the Vikings really gonna let Percy go for a 3rd round pick?

I'm hearing they want a 2nd and 4th. But I highly doubt they get what they want, so I'm thinking 3rd and 5th maybe.

As a Gator, I would love him here..but as others have said, I worry about the injury risk.

He does produce though when he's on the field.

This might be a silly question, but would you do a Alex Smith and a pick (or Haralson or whatever) for Percy Harvin and Christian Ponder? Fill-in an appropriate pick for both sides, not a greedy one, if possible. Not saying they would or wouldn't do it, just wondering.....

The reason I ask is because you said you wouldn't need a QB that was like Kaepernick, just someone that could be ready behind him to spot duty or sub in for the remainder of the year if injured. Then, you mentioned a third round pick for Harvin as a relative value.

1. The Vikings would not want Alex.
2. Haralson has no trade value.
3. The Vikings would not trade Ponder.
4. I wouldn't want Ponder on the 49ers.

As far as a 3rd for Percy goes, I think that's too little. He's worth a 2nd rounder. And not the 63rd pick; more like 40-50.
