The police accused Connell of stealing $863 from the locker of his teammate Deuce McAllister on Dec. 5, and $3,500 from McAllister's car on Dec. 9. Connell turned himself into the police on Dec. 28 after a judge issued warrants for his arrest on charges of theft.

Bob Long, the Jefferson Parish assistant district attorney, said in an interview that his office had viewed a team security videotape that showed Connell stealing money from McAllister's locker. Long said his office was still deciding if formal charges should be filed.

Connell has since returned most of the cash to McAllister, team officials say. Through his agent, Peter Schaffer, Connell denied stealing anything, and instead called the episode a prank. He was first suspended for four games without pay, and the team cut him this month.
