'72 Summit Series - Nothing tops "Henderson has scored for Canada"

/Although the '87 Canada Cup comes very close

You know what I honestly thought watching the Summit Series after all I'd heard? "Is the only reason that people think this was a dead-even series because Dryden laid a fucking egg back there in his 4 games and Tretiak played great?"

Yup. Like when Kennedy got shot, I know exactly where I was when Henderson scored. "sick" at home in my parent's recroom.....

After that though they kind of turned into love ins. Too many teammates on both sides.

So much more than just a hockey series. Lets just say no one accused Alan Eagleson of colluding with the Russians!

The fate of the free world hung in the balance...

Especially given the wonky start, that 7-3 shellacking on Sept 2, 1972, which happened to be my 17th birthday.

They were lucky Tony O was around till Dryden got his game back.

Dryden was awful and Tretiak was great and the Canadians as a team were horribly out of shape.

/It also helped that Bobby Clarke broke Kharmalov's ankle with a wicked two-hander in game 6.

I think if JP Parise would have followed through, he might have ended up in the gulag...

Kompalla was from West Germany anyway, no gulag for attacking other capitalist pigdog.

I still thought that Canada had the better of the chances in almost every game though, even if they were out of shape.

Canada's dislike for the choice of officials in Moscow is much more well documented. The Canadians were particularly upset at the refereeing of West Germans Franz Baader and Josef Kompalla. The tandem had worked the exhibition games in Stockholm and had enraged the NHLers with many questionable penalty calls. After the second game, they had dubbed the officials "Baader and Worse" or "Baader and Wurst."

The fate of the free world hung in the balance...

Just about...

Anyone under 40 today would have a very difficult time understanding the geopolitical undertones. The world was soooo different then. People did not go to, or escape from, Communist countries. In the West, we really had no idea what went on in those parts of the world. SALT was in the future, and the threat of war was always in the background (not like the 50s, but still there). The only thing we knew about the 'amateurs' from the USSR was that they always won Olympic gold because they weren't really amateurs.

All of this added to the uniqueness and allure of the Series.

Non-Homer series 1987 isles/Caps Patrick Division semi-final. Isles down 3-1 in the series. Isles win the next 3. Pat Lafontaine GWG goal in 4 OT game 7, "Easter Epic."

Homer Series 1992 Wales Conference Final. Bruins win first 2, Kevin Stevens guarantees the Pens win the series. Milbury calls Bob Johnson "the professor of goonism." Pens win the next 4 to advance to their first Stanley Cup Final.

That Canada Team from 87, jeebus, #66,#99 and Hawerchuck on a line lol. They cut Steve Yzerman for crying out loud.

That Leafs/Sens series. I remember Roberts going out and drilling either Hossa or Havlat into the boards early and you could tell he was shutting it down for the rest of the series, a beautiful feeling. Those years where Quinn would send Sundin and Mogilny out on the PK together, pure magic. If the Leafs could have gotten a slightly less used up Mogilny and Roberts to play with Sundin earlier, who knows.

I'd be curious to know where the 2007 WHL finals rank for you.

1993 Leafs against Kings was a great series. Gilmour is one of my favourite players of all-time. I also didn't hate that whole Leafs team. Plus Bob Cole was in his prime.

1996 or 1997 Wings-Avalanche were two great series as well.
wasnt that the "feed dougie gilmour" series? i remember somehting about leafs fans and "feed doug gilmour" (a pun onj him being so skinny).

Roberts was gangbusters against the Isles in round 1 too.

Had Sundin never gotten injured (and fuck Arturs Irbe, of course), that year was probably the Leafs best chance to get to the Final and get smoked by the Red Wings.

Bure was offside on the series winner...

:behindsofa:

Is that what we've come to? Hiding behind sofas because we speak the truth?

/Richter threw his stick in the final and Bure should have gotten a penalty shot
