lol well I fucked this one up.

Maybe I should have set some guidelines

nah. Great thread with lots of good chat/post. I've enjoyed reading through this one.

And Packerz threw his name out there and I'd second it, Joe Bonamassa.

Well, if that's the case, then why isn't the list composed of Yngwie Malmsteen, Satriani and the likes?
The question was "Best Ever". Not the most technically skilled, or the best Blues or Prog Rock player, it's whose the GOAT. Whose criteria IMO, includes iconic status just as much as technical skill, especially since we're comparing a trade that spans 50 years!?

Can't believe I had to scroll through three pages before the name Ingwie Malmsteen was even mentioned. I only wish I saw this thread when it started yesterday.

I don't even know if I really have a favorite, I did like Greg Lake with King Crimson and ELP though.

Lake is also damn good.

Jaco was the man.

Jaco was amazing

James Jamerson was also an amazing bassist. The Motown Sound was founded on his playing.

Les Claypool(Primus), Tony Levin(King Crimson, Peter Gabriel), and Victor Wooten are my personal faves on bass.

Love Wooten too.

Jaco

Roger Waters and John Paul Jones are by far the best on bass. Stanley Clarke too, if you get into his music.

Saw Stanley Clark in 1990 at the Metron in Harrisburg Pa. The guitar player had a Marshall halfstack. The rest of the stage was covered with Clark's bass rig, which was about 10 cabinets and assorted amps. My ears are STILL ringing

Saw him with Jan Hammer circa 78 or so. This guy did things on a bass that I didn't think was possible

Yeah, he's totally awesome. He writes for movies now, wrote most of the music for The Transporter, an outstanding soundtrack.

Jimmy Vaughn(Stevie's Brother)

Alex Lifeson of Rush

These two should be added, but out of the choices I have to go with Eric Clapton because of this.

Jimmy Vaughn Blows , not even in the same planet as a player as his brother.......:L

Out of the group mentioned. I went with SRV. I could have easily have gone with EVH as well.

I love all those guitar players but am convinced that Pat Metheny is technically superior to all of them. Also, I wouldn't list Jimi Hendrix or other players who rely on heavy distortion all the time. That said, Eddie is probably more of a musician than all of those guys put together, minus Randi Rhodes.

I have to say, I am shocked SRV is leading this poll. I dig SRV, don't get me wrong...just a little surprised.

Jimi Hendrix 4:1 over Eddie? Puhlease. I'd like to see those two sit down without hallucinogenic drugs on an acoustic. Jimi would politely decline and slip out the back door.

You have obviously missed Hendrix's "Hear My Train a Coming" on acoustic. It is available on the soundtrack from the movie about him, and on the DVD release of said movie.

I guess I judge the GOAT with different criteria than just skillset.

I can go to any Mall in America, and find something with Jimi Hendrix's face or name on it. Can't say the same for ANY of the others listed.

Maybe we should see who's estate is worth the most...

btw, I accidentally voted for Page.....which is ok.

Jimi redefined confidence. Not only would he not back down from that challenge, he would try to fuck your lady in front of you while doing it.
