The Wall has to be tops.
Some other great calls in Neil Young- Rust Never Sleeps; Tom Petty- Damn the Torpedoes; Cheap Trick- Dream Police; The Clash- London Calling; The Police- Reggatta de Blanc; Led Zepplin- In Through the Out Door

Others that no one has mentioned yet:
The Specials- The Specials
Van Halen- Van Halen II
AC/DC - Highway to Hell (How did no one mention this one yet?!?!?)
Frank Zappa- Joe's Garage (I LOVE this album! Funniest rock music ever!)
Fleetwood Mac- Tusk

Some others that I missed:

Supertramp- Breakfast in America
UFO- Strangers in the Night (One of the greatest live albums of rock)
Madness- One Step Beyond
Scorpions- Lovedrive
Judas Priest- Unleashed in the East

It's really silly of people to assume any album that year is better than The Wall. There are some damn fantastic albums that year but none top The Wall.

Some very good albums from the Jazz genre:

Spyrogyra -- Morning Dance
Pat Metheny -- American Garage
Al DiMeola -- Splendido Hotel
Michael Franks -- Tiger in the Rain
Eberhard Weber --- Fluid Rustle
Jack DeJohnette -- Special Edition
Ralph Towner -- Old Friends, New Friends

Good selections.

Was actually going to add Morning Dance and forgot.; I didn't realize American Garage was '79 or I would have added it; Splendido Hotel somehow slipped me mind.

Yeah, loved that one.

Might as well add, Sheik Yerbouti since we're on the subject.

Based on what criteria? I love The Wall - don't get me wrong - but I'll take most a few of the albums yoga mentioned in his jazz list over it any day of the week.

Based on the criteria set by OP. Best Album of 1979. The question was not personal favorite or best album per genre. It was best album!

Based on sales Billy Joel 52nd Street was the number one seller of 79. A great album in it's own right.

Right; but it still comes down to personal taste as there isn't really any concrete criteria to determine what the best album is. I'm actually interested (not being facetious either) on just how about you can determine that The Wall is better than One Of A Kind (Bill Bruford).

Interesting.
Wonder what the total number of sales from then until now is, for all the albums mentioned so far.
Which album from 1979 has sold the most over the long run.

I'll venture out on a limb here and say "The Wall." :noidea:

Yeah, it'd have to be The Wall. In Through The Outdoor probably still has strong sales. As do Tusk and The Long Run.

I would think Album sales and concert gross might be a good start. Not to mention it's just flat out a much better album.
