I thought you were joking. Has any NFL team EVER franchised a kicker.

I think this is just because they don't know who to franchise.

Worst front office ever.

This pretty much seals Reggie Nelson being gone which leaves us with the worst safeties in the NFL by a mile.

Dude, are you joking? ...and you call yourself a football fan! OF COURSE a kicker has been franchised before. Remember that one perrenial winning team who franchised a kicker...it was um, oh Christ it was us. We franchised Graham. Fuck this team.

I can understand wanting nelson back....but tagging him? I just dont think he is worth that much, even for 1 year.

He's worth that much when it leaves us the losers we have if he leaves.

So you guys would rather overpay Reggie Nelson than let him go? Is he really that good?

I'm not a Bengal apologist, but it seems like an obvious choice to me. 2 million for a kicker that played fairly well vs. top safety dollar for a guy that isn't any good.

I thought Nelson played pretty well all things considered. Nonetheless, with the amount of money we're below the cap, overpaying for anyone for one year is no big deal. Plus, it buys us another year to find depth at one of our most depleted positions, if not for his replacement altogether.

Despite Nugent missing some big kicks last season, I don't see us going in a different direction anytime in the near future, so there really is no reason not to lock him up long term and not waste the tag. And even if next season we decided to cut him for whatever reason, the cap hit would be minimal.

Typical Bengal move.

You have to take into account that if Nelson leaves, we're screwed. There aren't really any good safeties available that are better than Nelson anyway, and the safeties we have blow. I would have franchised him in a heartbeat. Rumor is that Nelson is worth about $5 mil on the open market. It would have cost $6 mil to franchise him. Worth the extra million to me.

Vance has said it best. After Nelson (who isn't that good to begin with) our safeties are absolutely trash. You can not expect to do well without a somewhat decent safety.

If my old ass memory serves me correctly, didnt the Bengals tag Shane Graham a few years back?

I think Nelson stinks.... If you want to throw that kind of change at an FA safety, why not give it to Dwight Lowery of the Jags? He'd sign for that number and I think he has better potential in coverage (and actually making picks) than Reggie Nelson.

Reggie Nelson is a fucking bum. Besides, we already traded for our 2012 starting SS. Taylor Mays is going to be a beast, guys.

I agree with this. If you understand the tag, I can see franchising a kicker, since he is one of the top in the league. We really have no other players we should franchise to pay so much money to keep for one year.

Reggie Nelson? Gimme a break. He played decent one year, but paying him like a top 5 safety in the league? No fucking way. Sign him to a two year deal, but franchising him would give him way too much money than he deserves.

Dwight Lowery is not going to sign a 1 year contract.

I don't think you understand the tag. One of its main advantages is to allow you to keep a (relatively) valuable player for one additional year while you

1) determine if he is worth signing long term (assuming he hasn't consistently shown he's a keeper), or

2) probably as is our case, try to find a replacement without losing that (relatively) valuable player, being left with garbage, and making your team even worse.

Who gives a crap if he makes more money than he deserves for one year. This is about looking out for the interests of the Bengals not only long term, but also short term.

There is no reason not to lock Nugent up long term. None.
