I know early on the talk was about getting another RB...but Brown turned out to be pretty darn good, even on 3rd down protection. Think the Bengals got a steal with him - and I was big on him coming out of the draft. With the focus on the IOL to protect Joe (and rightfully so) I think we all forget that the biggest benefactor might just be Brown...

he was a workhorse in college, so if he can stay healthy he could be looked at as a top 10 back in the NFL.
I remember man-splainin' to some facebook bengal fanatics that he was in fact good, in spite of not having dede dorsey like preseason heroics.

With the drafting of McKnight and the kid from Clemson...no surprise, the Bengals finally release Germaine Pratt...

You couldn't even make this stuff up. An organization that refuses to negotiate with their start DE drafts a "replacement" in the 1st round - and then refused to negotiate with him as well...currently, neither are actively on the roster.

Meanwhile, they released Pratt, which they should have, but held on to him for....what exactly? Should have been released once the draft was over.

Seriously - WTF are Katie and Troy doing? A speeding bus could not find this family soon enough.

They literally have 32 million in cap space right now which doesn't include Hendrickson's 16 million. So if they gave him another 16 million and gave him a 2 additional years at the same rate with 2 years guaranteed, we would still be well under the cap this year and next. Plus, you can front load to make the next couple years cheaper.

I don’t want to be dramatic, but I’ll be surprised if Shemar Stewart isn’t a bust at this point. Everything about this situation is headed towards disaster.

Underproducing college player gets over drafted based on traits. Organization that drafts said player tries to force weird contract language that hedges their bet on the risk they took. Player misses valuable development time holding out. Calls out the front office publicly for poor performance, before ever taking a snap in practice for the team.

Waste of a pick. Again. Not that Katie and Troy care in the slightest. As long as they “win” the deal.

From what I saw - sounds like the contract isn't even about hedging against his performance. It's a lot of off-field stuff they added to the contract that other contracts do not have, and that Mims did not have last year. They also offered him below slot at one point...IIRC...

I'm not a fan of the Stewart pick - but I am 100% on his side with this. He could not have said it better and finally said the quiet part out loud: The Browns/Blackburns rather "win" a negotiation than do what is fair and equitable for the player.

Honestly, I'm not even against character clauses in some situations. Had they drafted Green or Pearce, I think it's likely warranted based on their history off the field. I'd at least understand that, even if I didn't agree with it 100%. In this case, the Bengals are, as usual, not just out in left field - they are even in the ballpark.

I use this phrase often - but the Bengals step over dollars to pick up dimes. The way they approach contracting and negotiations leaves them spending more in the long run, but up front they think they are saving money. Look at the Bates contract, or the Whitworth contract, or soon to be the Hendrickson contract. If they had just acknowledged up front that they had a really good player, and that player deserved an HONEST contract...they would have likely agreed to a contract somewhere in the middle, and would have stopped spending money and resources trying to replace them OR spending way more money a year, or two, down the road to re-sign said player.

By dragging their feet and holding their stance like a petulant child...the Bengals cost themselves more and more money/resources than they would have ever needed. Sign Higgins last year...this year isn't an issue. Sign Trey right into the off-season, none of the new deals would have vaulted his contract another 5-6-7 million.

They see the dime they can have, and don't see the dollars they are stepping over to pick up the dime.
