I doubt the Sixers could get below the cap regardless of what they do with Simmons. According to spotrac, getting rid of Simmons would basically leave the Sixers about flat on the cap.

It’s not likely to open up more than about 10 mil in cap space when all is said and done and you have to account for losing the exception. So really it’s about a difference of 5-6 million a year. You can sign Georges Niang with that. They need value in the contracts coming back.

He's the one who publicly said he would never play for the Sixers again and made it personal.
