His value will certainly improve as teams can trade free agent signings and become more desperate to make a move.

I fundamentally disagree with you that the Sixers need to trade him for pennies on the dollar. There is no point in that. That won't notably improve the team. Trading Simmons so they could be a somewhat better early round exit team achieves nothing.

He really has one choice, which is to come back and play and try to improve his trade value. If he doesn't do that, well, he is going to rot, forfeit his salary, and possibly never play NBA ball again. I am all for it.

You may be right on the last point. So again, why would you give in now? Simmons wants to ruin the Sixers? Fine, let's see how that works out for him. He will be the one ruined. The bottom line is the "loss" you speak of cannot be undone for Philly. By giving in now, all they would do is deepen it. Meanwhile Simmons would gain. So why do it?

It's possible that Philly's window is closed. It for sure is closed if Morey takes back a terrible deal for Simmons. Which is why he'd sooner redshirt Simmons than trade him for loose change.

Making a deal that doesn't net a commensurate return back for Simmons likely puts an end to the entire Embiid window. The Sixers are cap-strapped and would only have the midlevel exception available to them. It's not ideal to waste any of Embiid's prime, but it's better than just quitting on that prime.

That makes absolutely no sense. Seems to me the rest of the team is done with him and doesn't really care. The media and fan base seems perfectly happy with letting Simmons rot on the bench.
