If we sign Beltran and Grady, we'll be back in business:

CF-Sizemore
2B-Franchez
C-Posey
3B-Sandoval
LF-Beltran
1B-Huff
RF-Schierholtz
SS-Crawford

Torres/Stewart/Gillaspie/Belt/Burriss

Brandon Belt says, "When will Grady be on the DL?"
(EDIT: Then he says, "Shit! I needed a corner outfielder to go down to avoid being Aubrey's bat boy. Oh well, at least I'm on a winning club.")

Here's another perspective on the payroll situation from Grant Brisbee on McCovey Chronicles:

"How about instead of trading him to afford other good players, how about you just buy the other good players? In the short-term, it might put them overbudget, but when the wretched contracts come off the books in the next two years, the Giants will look for ways to spend that money. Spend it now while Lincecum's here, and hope that they're all still effective in the future when you have to stick to the budget"

IDK how plausible this is because by the time Zito/RoRo/Huff are off the books it will be time to pay for Sandoval, Posey, Bum etc. But, is there any chance at all the Giants put all there chips on the table and go big money these next 2 years with this window they have?

Grant is my favorite blogger, but the answer to his question is simple:

BECAUSE THE OWNERS WON'T APPROVE IT. And he knows this. He's asking for a $140MM payroll, which just isn't going to happen. Further, his reasoning is specious (why not spend it NOW, instead of when Zito/RoRo come off the books) -- what do you think the odds are that ownership ups payroll to $140 this year and then starts scaling back down to $125 in two years??

Slim and fucking none. What Grant is calling for is what Damon LeDouche calls for every year -- SPEND MORE MONEY. Grant's argument has a nice twist to it (spend it now, save it later) but we all know payroll isn't going to be contracted later to make up for overspend now. It would be a PR nightmare. If the Giants upped payroll to $140 this year, the same people would be clambering for $160 the next year. And Baer would have to explain that we've already had our cake last year and have to diet this year.

yeah, that'd go over well.

And on it goes.
