Martin Brodeur has dedicated his Hall of Fame career to serving as the rock behind the Devils' defense. Thursday morning, the NHL's all-time leader in wins said that earlier this week he informed goalie coach Chris Terreri that right now Johan Hedberg is New Jersey's best option in net.

Brodeur has the worst save percentage among starters in the league at .882. What do people think? Is this his last season as a starter?

Scott Stevens retiring was the beginning of the end for Brodeur... :D

Seriously, he's a great goalie that's been ridden into the ground since the lockout. They lost Odelien, Daneyko, Stevens, Neidermayer, and the guy kept playing 70+ games well into his late 30's. They should have been cutting back on his games played five years ago when he started struggling in the playoffs.

I remember a stat they showed in last year's SCF, (when I say "remember", I mean "kind of remember the gist of"). No goalie who has played more than 70 games a season has won the Cup in a LOOOOONG time. I don't wonder why, do you?

Marty trying to bench himself?...is that what he means?...

I think so. It's not a permanent thing, but I guess he feels like the team is better off with Hedberg for now and he needs some games off to recalibrate and get his head back right again.

Favorite Caps' game cheer from years ago (actually the night Hanlon was fired)

Brodeur also has the lowest goalie rating among true starters this year...

But yes, this is likely a product of serious wear on his body from playing way too many games the last five seasons or so. It's the same effect as you see in aging pitcher in baseball being run out for 200 innings a year.

It's to bad but like others have said they flat out burned the guy out. It's sad for sure. Still one of the greats.

Methinks there's gotta be something more to it than just burnout though.

The guy still managed 75+ games last year (though he did fizzle out in the POs) and still garnered a Vezina nod.

My guess would be a nagging injury that's giving him more trouble than they let on.

After this season, probably. Something has gotta change, and Kovy is not a goalie.

There can be carry-over effects from one season to another as a product of shutting it down in the offseason and then not being able to get it back again the next season.

Again I draw my baseball analogy. Cole Hamels threw 200 innings for the first time in his life the first year the Phillies won the world series. Ever since, he hasn't been the same. He was fine during the stretch, but in following seasons, he struggled. I think that can also be the case for goaltenders, and I think it's entirely feasible that's what's happening with Brodeur.

Marty is a class act and team player. I applaud him for this.
When he signed his current contract, he could of asked for a lot but he came out and said that if I sign a big dollar contract then there will be not enough money for other good players to be signed.

After this season, probably. Something has gotta change, and Kovy is not a goalie.

And doesn't even even consider the defensive end in his play.
If he was to be in goal, we would have an empty net for the whole game.:D
