That was the only reason, as it usually is in warfare. Having perceived "right" on one's side has jack and squat to do with anything in combat, despite inane beliefs of clueless civilians.

Well, when you repeatedly charge into the middle of a superior force that is on higher ground in a gauntlet you get your ass kicked. Two times Lee got his ass kicked and he still did it again. I'm shocked he did it. So were all of his officers. After that even if they still had the means to win the war the troups were too demoralized to do so.

He could either surrender or slowly but surely whittle away his men.
