Except Mariano had his best season in his first full seasonHe also had a normal performance curve.
Mariano? Not so much.

Rivera was 38 in his first full season?Except Mariano had his best season in his first full season
So, a season in which Rivera pitched 70.2 innings, had a 2.03 FIP and a 9.81 K/9 is better than a season in which he pitched 107.2 innings with a 1.88 FIP and a 10.87 K/9?Rivera was 38 in his first full season?
FIP comes from the Land of MakeBelieve, so that's neither here nor there. A pitcher has his defense behind him, not an imaginary one created by some guy with pit stains.
To me, the best season ever, for the best closer ever, wasn't as a setup man.
