Jack Hoffman's fight against cancer dealt a setback, father says : Latest Husker News

Jack Hoffman will need more chemotherapy after doctors said his inoperable brain tumor has grown, his dad said Wednesday.
The 8-year-old Atkinson native's fight with pediatric brain cancer has grabbed national headlines since former Husker running back Rex Burkhead befriended Jack three years ago.
The Hoffmans learned of Jack's tumor in April 2011, after he suffered a life-threatening seizure.
Jack's cancer was declared in remission last October.
Doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital found a “spot of concern” in April, but the family remained optimistic it was nothing, Jack’s father Andy Hoffman wrote on his son’s Caring Bridge page.
On Wednesday, Jack’s doctors told the family his brain tumor had grown since an April MRI and will require some treatment, his father wrote.
“Today we were humbly reminded that when your child has an inoperable brain tumor, that anything can happen at any point in time,” Andy Hoffman said.
Jack will have many treatment options, including a clinical trial targeted for a specific genetic mutation Jack has.
The family will have a final recommendation from Jack’s doctors on Thursday after they meet again to weigh his treatment plan, Andy said.
“This is a mild setback and everyone remains optimistic for Jack, including and especially his Mom and Dad,” Andy Hoffman wrote.
Meanwhile, Jack will travel to Kansas City Thursday to watch Burkhead, now a Cincinnati Bengals running back, play in a preseason game against the Chiefs.
