The SEC is getting all those High School recruits. Urban was in the SEC and he has Ohio State up there.

If the B1G doesn't change, this media event known as announcing your choice on TV is going to just snowball and just be an SEC showcase. Which it already is.

What the B1G needs to do is get Mr UnderArmour(Maryland man) to do another HIgh School All Star game for the players that are committed to the B1G and do it in a dome up north and broadcast it on FOX or the BTN.

LOL, Exactly.

We know Under Armour won't drop this game as it means money to UA, but the B1G needs to get in on the action of having the High School Kids come on TV with their families and announcing, surprise!! I am attending a B1G school.

Should probably be on the Fox Sports though to make sure it comes across as being UNBIASED.

I'm still a believer that recruiting rankings only matter to a certain extent. Rankings are typically based on going to football camps and good performances early in HS. Kids in the south typically have higher rankings because of how much they play before HS and live and breath football.

Nut could probably speak the most about this. But I also think rankings still partially go by who has offered them. Relying on the Colleges to do the scouting. Thus if a guy is only getting offers from the likes of FAU or FIU, he's probably only a 1 or 2 star, but if it's Bama or Texas, he's got to be at least a 4. Also, it just seems to me that there are a lot of guys that are 3 stars but probably deserve 4, but because they didn't go to a camp and only came on strong their senior year, the recruiting services aren't bumping them up.

Meyer is lucky that Ohio is considered a good football state so the rankers spend some more time there and rate guys higher, just like they spend way more time in the South and rank guys higher. NU is very good at scouting talent, look at the guys that are lower ranked but then NU sees them and other teams come running too. A lot of times jumping that guy's ranking.

You're right on many points i.e. college offers increase star rankings, the recruiting sites that sponsor camps are pushing their product therefore inflate the players ability to a degree, and so on.

The heart of the matter, however, is really location and culture. High school football is much bigger (and much more visible via camps, media exposure, namesake... ) in southern states a la Texas, Florida, Louisiana, etc..., in addition to California and Ohio. It's part of their culture. Recruiting is also directly related to population density. A growing, high school football trend, in the northeast (NJ, NY and MD, specifically) is leading to more fertile recruiting grounds, however, the culture in that area is still more basketball oriented. I think the B1G footprint in the northeast will prove to be beneficial for midwestern states in years to come. Targeting southern schools like GTech, North Carolina and Virginia would further help our talent pool.

Then of course school tradition, coaching and just plain winning all factor in. This is where schools like Nebraska, Notre Dame (right in the center of B1G country) and Michigan can make up serious ground on "4" and "5" recruits (though ND and UofM land quite a few). Ultimately, go after solid kids that want to be there, and coach them up. TCU, Boise State, Oregon, Wisconsin, and Michigan State have had sustained success, without top 10 classes.

Speak for your own program. The one I cheer for recruits just fine.

Recruiting is all BS. Guys a 3 star, sommits to Bama now hes a 4 star. Guys a 3 star, commits to Rutgers, now hes a 2 star. Also its a lot easier to recruit when you arent beholden to things like scholarship limits. When you bring in a hundred guys, see who is looking good and then yank 15 of their schollies from the kids that cant cut it its a ton easier to be really good.

How highly touted were Nebraska's recruits in the early 90's?

There is merit to that but I think you have to go clear back to the '95 and '97 Nebraska teams to find national champions that didn't have a single "top 10" class.

I'm still firmly sold on great coaching, sprinkled in with a few playmakers, in order to be "relevant."

I also believe that "rankings" don't mean that much IF whom you recruit is teachable in the skills needed. TO while he did have some recruiting classes ranked (top 20) on occasion, still had the assistants to teach the recruits he got to play better than their recruiting ranking. The last couple of years, Texas, LSU among others still have had great recruiting classes and still underperformed.

Recruiting has so many factors its not funny. We all know the SEC pays it players and buys it recruits. The NCAA is a fucking joke. If you don't believe me just ask a Penn St fan. Tom Osborne also was willing to recruit a few and yes I'll say it, thugs. I just gotta say I was and still am a fan of Lawrence Phillips the best tailback ever at Nebraska and yes a thug. Pelini doesn't recruit that type of kid. Nebraska could use a little of this and that's my opinion.
