I really don't have a problem with the team exploring all options before releasing the player. I agree with J_Y that it's a long shot but still worth trying.

I was one of the few who didn't have a problem when they extended his deal. Hell if it nets a 7th we have seen what GMSM can do with late round picks and that pick would be all the result of the team extending the deal. If he's cut it's was a no lose decision. The only risk they took was injury and when they sat him that ended that risk.

Hindsight is 20/20 but best case scenario would have been not to tag him, let him walk as a free agent, watch as he has a stellar year or even decent year, and then get a compensatory pick for him.

Not sure if we've ever had a compensatory pick and too lazy to look it up but if Griffin goes elsewhere and plays extremely well it likely could given us something more than a 7th.

Real world no is likely leaving us with nothing. I understand the fifth year option but you can argue it did hurt us in the long run.

I'll take my chances that Griffin does not go somewhere else and lights it up next year. No I'll take a 7th and run thanks.

NO doubt the option screwed us. It was a matter of over thinking things and being penny wise and pound foolish. I can only guess that the thinking at the time was, the option was projected to be $4 million less than the franchise tag and we could then negotiate a long term deal if he worked out, or cut him if he didnt. No one even considered the possibility that he wouldnt take a single snap, and the option made him basically untradable last year. And its going to take some serious want from another team to trade him now.

And the bonus is, because we technically have him under contract, if we release him and he goes else where and does well, we wont even get a comp pick because we had the ability to retain him.

If you can't trade him for a first or second, you don't trade him. He would likely net us a third in a compensatory pick.

If we cut him or trade him, we will not be eligible for compensatory picks.

Of course there are teams interested in him. Ego runs mighty deep in the NFL. Every organization believes "they" can make it work. Remember, Griffin sat an entire year. Now that doesn't bode well for his football skills but it bodes well for his health. If he is cut there will be at least 10 teams interested in signing him, and would. Perhaps not starter for all 10 but 2nd string for some. Have you seen the list of 2nd string QB's in this league. Not to impressive. He will be traded. The only question is for what. A player, draft choice,,, who knows,,, but anticipate a trade.

Do we actually have to cut him? When did it become official we picked up his fifth year option? I believe we just don't take the option...he isn't actually cut.

I'm pretty sure he is under contract with the skins through 2016. There just is an out for the team to cut him with no penalty. So, yes, we are releasing him.

We had to exercise the option last year. By doing so we basically extended him for one year at $16.1 million. If we decided to release him we wont get any sort of comp pick for him because in effect, we release a player already under contract.

Yep...a little research and he is under contract. On March 9, his contract becomes fully guaranteed...my miss read.

Yup. And we can't trade him until the new year starts. So if it happens they will have less than a day to execute it. Maybe just minutes.

Why do they have such a short time? If teams have contacted us about a trade, they understand the 16 million dollars this season. The only way around it is to work a new contract with RG3 and trade him. While I agree, nobody will pay him 16 mil this season, guaranteeing 16 mil over a couple of seasons and him playing would peak his interest.

Im sure there is a specific time frame on the 9th that RG3 must be released by or they owe him the $16M. It may be one minute after midnight on the 9th. And since no teams can have direct contact with Griffin or his agent (yeah, right) until the league year starts (again on the 9th at a specific time), they theoretically can begin any negotiations with him (cause no one is paying him $16M next year) until the 9th. In fact, the Skins probably have to cut him before the 9th. So there is a time element making any trade scenario highly unlikely.

He must be released by 4:00 PM on the 9th or the $16 million hits our books.

The Skins CAN give him permission to talk with other teams in order to facilitate a trade ahead of this time.

The real issue is, would Griffin even want to talk to another of these teams. Would the promise of being the unquestioned starter be enough for him to rework his deal and go to certain teams.

My guess would be, the only way the Skins trade him is to a team that willingly says, we will take him at $16 million and then try and rework his deal once he is on our books. Because as many have said, he has no reason to do the Skins any favors.

Being the undisputed starter is the key. He doesn't want to compete for the position, he never has. Even as far back as his choice of where to go to school, he opted for his second choice, Baylor, because he was promised a starters role. His first choice was Stanford until they signed a guy by the name of Luck. Once that happened, he withdrew his verbal commitment to Stanford and signed with Baylor.
So if a team comes calling and wants him as a starter, he might consider a trade. But then, he is going to want starter money....in the $16M range.

well i doubt any team trade for him unless they feel another team will sign him first

i doubt the 16 mil will be renegotiated but it could

i think trying to trade is a good idea but i highly doubt it happens
