Kimbrel puts up video game numbers, A closer would have to set the single season save record to get any serious consideration for the Cy Young

Eck saved 50 games that year and sports writers thought that would never happen again. That's why it would take a monumental save record to get consideration to win in the present

They were pumping K-Rod for the record, if I remember correctly. I think he had more than a handful of one out saves.

You will never get me to get behind a closer for the Cy Young, and you have a slim chance of getting me to back a starting pitcher for MVP.

I don't want to hear about "closer mentality". A major league pitcher is asked to get three outs in a game with as much as a 3 run lead, and in most cases (90-95%?), he is starting an inning with the bases empty.

And...in many of those cases, he may not be facing the best hitters in the order for the opposing team.

Yawn.

That is not to say that I don't appreciate the job guys like Kimbrel and Mariano do every day, or Koji this season for Boston, but don't invite me to the parade for them.

that's fine, but you do realize a closer has ZERO chance at a reward which doesn't make sense to me.

this too

No player in Major League Baseball history has won the Most Valuable Player Award during a season in which their primary position was designated hitter.

so a DH and closer has no shot? un-cool if you ask me....

do they still give out the "Rolaids Relief Man" Award? These guys still get paid WAY more than they should, so excuse me if I don't cry them a river.

These guys pitch no more than one-third the innings of a starter and get paid better than most of them. Certainly no less than half of what a typical top starter gets.

To try to compare it to football, the closer is the equivalent of a backup QB coming in after the starter gets them down to the 5 yard line.

Maybe a better football comparison is the RB that runs it down to the 1 yard line, and then gets pulled for the "goal line back'.

What do the set up men get? They get paid much less than a closer, and many more times than a closer, they are called in with guys on base and the best hitter or hitters coming up.
