Miller is a really good starter. He is the type of guy that gets you to the playoffs. I don't know if he is going to be an Ace or anything and AZ gave up a LOT.

The Cards will be fine, they got Jedd Gyorko.
Eh, he hits well against lefties which is important to the Cards but Jon Jay is the better player. Probably a minor win/win for both teams.

Laughably bad deal.

Dave Stewart is retarded. Fuck being PC. He deserves the R word.

If Jay has a good first half the Padres will look to flip him during the trade deadline. Jedd has power but swings and misses a lot, he should help the Cards bench at least.

We'll see. Swanson is not your typical #1 overall pick, it was a weak draft class. Blair is meh, could be a #4 starter. I'm most upset about losing Ender, but I'm also a big fan of Brito. Overall it makes us contenders. Was it an overpay? Sure. But look at the market for starting pitching, it's insane right now.

Miller is only 25 and has 3 years of control left, so it's no rental.

I agree with you on blair and swanson.

but it's 5 years of inciarte who has a comparable WAR last year. That's the real problem.

even just blair/swanson would've been an overpay but at least i'd get it.

Yeah, I think they got desperate and had their mind set on landing a #2/3 starter before the day ended. They'd rather trade for Miller and have $ to use on the bullpen/extending Pollock/Goldy in the future than sign someone like Leake.

The one positive from that trade is they landed a pretty good pitcher and didn't lose any money in the process. It's the assets we gave up to make it happen that hurt. Overall, if we can use that money we would've spent on Leake to put towards a Pollock extension then I'm good with it.

But you look at the excess SP's on the roster even w/out Miller, I think Blair was expendable.

Greinke, Corbin, Ray, De La Rosa, Bradley, Anderson, Godley plus Shipley, Young & Lopez waiting in the wings. I know it's typically dumb to thrown someone in just because you can but I think that's what the case with Blair was here.

Its a pretty logical move to lock up a cheap starter after nailing down the premiere starter with a massive price tag. It really does make a lot of sense.

The Braves still ripped you guys off in terms of actual talent but thats a different game altogether.

Agreed. I think it's a win-win. Both teams gained what they wanted from the trade. IF the prospects pan out then ATL looks really smart, if not, it's still not a bad trade for them to make in a rebuild since you know Ender will at least give you GG defense and can run the bases.

AZ adds a much needed starter with upside and team control and becomes a contender just like that.

I still think Rubby should be in your pen. Dude is a flame thrower...he's the next Kelvin Herrera if given a chance.

what are people's realistic expectations from Miller this year?

Too much considering the price to get him.

although it sounds like they are still in on Leake....fascinating move if AZ can pull that off.

Slight overpayment here for Arizona if you ask me but they are in win now mode so there you go.

I honestly don't want Leake. Our top three are set in Greinke-Miller-Corbin, then we have Robbie Ray, Archie Bradley, Rubby De la rosa, Chase Anderson, and 3-4 more good young starters in our system or close to MLB ready (Godley, Shipley, Young, Lopez) to fill out two spots. With this depth I think it's be pointless. Ray could put up just as good of numbers as Leake, then whoever wins the 5th spot had definitely earned it, and if they fail we have so many options to replace them.

Unless Leake takes a huge paycut I'd stay away.

I'd rather save that dough and lock up AJ Pollock.

I think Leake is pretty much not happening. Before the Miller acquisition he was willing to take a home town discount to come here since he's from Arizona. I think he's going to STL.

I saw some reports today saying AZ is still targeting him and trying to figure out how they can fit him in. Apparently his agent wants to see what his "retail value" is before coming to us with a discounted offer so we'll see. I hope we stay away though.

I think the Giants are going to try to steal Maeda and if they don't get him, they will circle back to Leake. I like Leake and frankly hope he comes back for a 4 yr deal so we can lock in our "paper top 3".

I say ~3.25-3.50 ERA, 16-17 wins (will get run support) w/ 200+ IP and around 170+ K's? Sound about right?

Sounds like a pretty good projection to me. Wins might be a little high but other than that good (I say 12-14 wins)

Pollack is gonna be the same issue for Az that cutch is for Pitt.

Neither should give them that next big deal.

But if Zona has the money, add some more to the pen and get a real 2B.
