NL West looking quite formidable all of a sudden.
Fernandez was going to cost a lot more than what was paid for Miller. AZ already offered this package to Miami for Fernandez. Miami wanted Corbin & another top prospect thrown in the deal.
Dang! Them Zona Zonabacks of Zona ain't messing around...
Wow. Maybe you go that far if you are already wiling to part with Swanson? I think Shelby Miller is a very good #2, but he's no ace. Maybe they could have had Chris Archer for a package like this? Maybe Syndergaard or Sonny Gray? Maybe not. But ARZ gave up a lot here.
Is it me, or do your Giants do a great job of NOT signing anyone they are interested in?

Great trade for Atlanta. Miller's good, but I feel like there's some downside with him. His peripherals leave a lot to be desired, even considering his age IMO. Inciarte might be a better player than Miller right now and is under control longer than Miller.
Arizona's got a pretty solid team now though IMO. Greinke and a lot of young pitching talent.
The Cards will be fine, they got Jedd Gyorko.Yup. LA and SF still aren't done either and I expect them to each make at least 2 more notable moves. Gonna be a competitive division. Could rival the NL Central next year with St. Louis looking shaky.
They did try and get Fernandez. They just weren't willing to give up Pollock and Corbin. This deal is far from an overpay. Miller had a 3.02 era last year. That is top of the rotation stuff. He had 0 run support last year so the record is deceiving. This looks like a severe overpay for Shelby Miller. They should have tried to get Jose Fernandez instead if they were willing to part with their best prospect. Swanson is a top 10 prospect overall and should be ready soon.

This is a great deal for both teams.
It's tough when you are banking on potential. Locally, I heard they wanted a package that included polloc orI wouldn't want to give up Pollock under any circumstances. Corbin I like, but maybe he and Swanson get you closer to Fernandez? Is Archie Bradley that much of an afterthought now? I like it for the DBacks, but they gave up a lot. They are smart to go for it now while they have Greinke and Goldschmidt and the rest of thst squad in place. I just wonder if you could have gotten an even better arm with that package. I threw out names like Archer, Syndergaard & Sonny Gray, but who knows if those guys would have been moved anyway.
I like everything AZ has done. Maybe gave up one piece too many for Miller but they believe their team can win now so why the hell not go for it? They still have pieces to move in-season, too.Either way you look at it this offseason we transformed our rotation from:
Corbin-De la rosa-Ray-Anderson-Bradley
to
Greinke-Miller-Corbin- w/2 of DLR/Ray/Anderson/Bradley, plus have promising arms in Shipley, Lopez & Young in the farm, they're pretty set on young pitching talent even after the trade.
Our entire IF is 25 or younger minus Goldy who just turned 28. Our OF is all under 28 as well. It's still a young team. Everyone saying we mortgaged our future is overreacting. We dealt from our depth and spent money and transformed the team into an instant contender. I'm loving the moves.
Exactly. KC may have been a head above the rest this year, but of the other 7 teams that made the DS were there any that you really said to yourself "these guys are way better than everyone else"? There's some good parity amongst contenders these days.I have pretty much always have said that if you make the playoffs in this era, you can win the WS. I believe playoff and WS contender are fairly interchangeable for the most part; so I'd actually agree with this.

Could be. One thing is for sure. Miller wont have 14 starts where his team fails to score 1 run like he did last year. He is a solid addition to a rotation that is coming together.I'm not so sure about that when you look past the ERA, because his WHIP, K/BB, FIP and innings/start were all nothing spectacular last year. When a pitcher's ERA outperforms his other stats like that, it often catches up to the pitcher. For a guy who's not a strikeout pitcher and a flyball pitcher as well (moving from a pitcher friendly park to a hitter friendly park), I don't think many are banking on him keeping his ERA that low next year.
FWIW, it seems like a number are projecting him to have an ERA closer to 4 than to 3 next year.
