I believe the owners are considering it, but I don't know that for a fact. I do know the players only care about 2020, despite what they claim publicly.

And that's extremely short sighted

serious question, I'm not a lawyer, I just play the best one on TV

If a mlb team or any sports team decides to claim bankruptcy, say the Oakland A's or Miami Marlins, are they off the hook of having to pay the players salaries that were aready signed?
I am not an accountant or a lawyer, but if I remember correctly from my business school years, declaring bankruptcy does not clear all debts. I think it just prevents liens or collections for a certain amount of time so the entity can attempt to get itself back on its feet. Further, some liabilities remain, and I believe taxes and labor are at the top of this list. I am not certain guaranteed contracts would qualify as labor, though. I think they are technically 1099 workers.

ESPN's Karl Ravech reports that MLB has sent a new proposal to players which includes 75-percent prorated salary as part of a 76-game season.
The regular season would end on September 27 and the postseason would conclude at the end of October. There would be playoff pool money and draft pick compensation wouldn't be attached to free agency this offseason. Ravech hears from sources that this new proposal would work out to more than $200 million more in player salaries. It sounds good on the surface, but the guaranteed percentage breakdown ultimately isn't much different from previous offers. Players could be faced with playing 48 games with full prorated pay or 76 games essentially being paid as if they played 57 games. There's more work to be done here to make baseball possible in 2020. For what it's worth, Bob Nightengale of USA Today hears from the MLBPA that this latest offer is considered a "step backwards." They have held firm on getting full prorated salary.
