Looking at his contract for the next 4-5 years, I'm not sure I'd be willing to deal equivalent talent for him. I think defense at SS is more important than offense, don't get me wrong, but I think the Braves got the better end of the deal on this one by just a bit. Aybar wasn't a defensive liability or anything, and Simmons' bat is a downgrade.

Interesting interpretation of stats.Downgrade? Aybar's and Simmons offensive years were almost identical and Simmons is a lot better defensively.
Interesting interpretation of stats.
Regardless, it's not always the best thing to look at one season.
I guess I'd want to know just what the M's are looking at as far as projected average payroll over the next 4-5 years before deciding one way or the other if it could've been a good move for the M's...not that we have a top AL SS to give up in any trade, lol.I am a big fan of Simmons. I think Angels made out very well. The guy is a vacuum at SS and can hold his own on offense. I would have welcomed him with open arms to Seattle and his contract isn't bad at all when averaged out over its remaining life.
Braves had an all-world defensive shortstop and couldn't wait to unload him. So, what does that say about Simmons?
They expect Braves to deal Aybar for younger talent. He only has one year left on deal so he would be an easy trade. Do M's take chance on him and let Marte backup for one more year or just run with Marte? I like Marte and thought he proved himself last year, but it also scares me to go into a season with no real vet at a position. 50/50 on this one.
