WOW!!

At face value this deal looks like a bad idea for the Bengals. Have to wait and see on the details. Dalton doesn't seem like the kind of player you make this type of commitment to.

I'll just re-post what I said in the other threads on this topic:

He's a QB, those guys get paid. I don't think Kap is anything special or Cutler is a top 5 QB, but they got paid. The position demands that those guys get paid even if they are not initially worth the contract. If you don't pay him/them, somebody else will.

It's better to be a have than a have not, who is constantly chasing a franchise QB every other season. Even if your QB is just an above average to good QB at this point, he's better than the alternative.

I can agree that QB's get paid and it's just the nature of the game today. I think the Cutler comparison is more valid than Kaepernick. But anyway, regardless of QB's getting paid, I just don't think Andy Dalton is a guy any team should pay that type of money to. Save that pay day for a guy who can move the needle. Dalton is the limiting factor on the Bengals.

A ridiculous amount of money for an average QB.

Ridiculous.

I about fell out of bed when I first saw the deal on my phone because I'm a huge Dalton critic but I'll have to see the full details in order to see if it's bearable

Need to see the details, but someone needs to be fired if that is true unless it's like no guaranteed money whatsoever. Guy barely is an NFL starting caliber QB. Wow, to be a Bengals fan right now...Maybe it's supposed to be $115,000???

Sorry, but that argument holds no water whatsoever. Dalton is AT BEST average. AT BEST!!! You can't generalize that because he is a QB he should get like $20M per year. Top 10 QBs, sure...I'll even go top 15 in the right situation. But Dalton?

Per Rotoworld he gets 17M guaranteed.

8/4/2014: Signed a seven-year, $97.09 million contract. The deal contains $17 million guaranteed -- a $12 million signing bonus and an initial roster bonus of $5 million. Another $19 million is available through escalators. Dalton is eligible for annual $200,000 workout bonuses in years two through seven. 2014: $986,000, 2015: $3 million (+ $4 million roster bonus due in March), 2016: $10.5 million, 2017: $13.1 million, 2018: $13.7 million, 2019: $16 million, 2020: $17.5 million, 2021: Free Agent

My 1st impression was Dalton raped the Bengals. It doesn't look to be that all of if whack after all. He may never see the final two years of this contract.

There are two people in this country that absolutely love this deal... Russell Wilson and Nick Foles. I thinks he's a good QB with nice stats. 4293 yards/62% completion/33 TDs. Those are legit numbers and he's definitely not just average. He had better numbers then Brady, Luck, Flacco, Wilson, Romo and Capernick and a bunch of those guys got over 100 million.

Now that I look he was 3rd in TD passes last year, 9th in completion percentage, and 4th in yards. He's definitely not barely average.

The money doesn't even come close averaging $20 mil a season. He is getting market value for an above average young QB. It averages to less than $14 mil a season on what is a basically a year-to-year contract after the second season, with incentives for him to add another $17+ mil over the life of the contract.

If he stays at his current level of production, that is fair market value, it he improves his play, the Bengals are getting him for below market value in the future. If he regresses over the next few seasons, the Bengals can cut him & take a minor cap hit for the signing bonus.

People for get that this is a passing league. There are only 15 teams or so with above average or better QB(s). Cincinnati is one of those teams & have a QB signed for the long term. The 15 other teams will continue chasing the franchise QB dragon every other season.

I'm not sure where you got your stats from. I guess it makes a better argument this way???

I was correct on the TDs, 2 spots off on yardage and accidentally only looked at the AFC QBs on completion percentage.

TD's Manning 55, Brees 39, Dalton 33, Rivers 32, Romo 31. So Im right on that one.

Passing yards Manning 5477, Brees 5162, Rivers 4478, Brady 4343, Stafford 4650, Dalton 4293. He is 6th in yards not 4th.

Passing percentage he was 4th in the AFC, that one was wrong.

The point is you said, "Guy barely is an NFL starting caliber QB". You are completely wrong on that. A QB that gives you 4300 yards and 33 TD's makes him top 10 in the NFL, not barely a NFL starting QB.

it is the going rate for starting QBs. So unless a team is looking to replace the QB all their contracts are gonna be like that.

Looks like they are only dedicated to him for about 3 seasons really. After that he is cuttable. Also like the part where some of that contract is on escalators. If he earns those so be it. At least he earned them. Doesn't look all that bad of a contract for the bengals if what has been reported is accurate. All QB contracts for now on will break 100mil. For any that is considered a starter.

Bengals committed about 3 years on him & if things work out they have him under contract. If not he is cuttable.
Said when the room contract came out. It is only gonna get more expensive for a long term starter.

Now the Niners contract was genius in my mind.
It is like yearly contracts bunched up into a 7 year contract.

Living in Baltimore I have been able to watch Andy Dalton play quite a few times over the past few years, and I don't think Dalton is as good as his stats might suggest. JMO though. He has some great talent around him, I personally think he is what is holding the Bengals back. Dalton folds up when the pressure is on.

You left off Ints and QB rating. i don't go by stats as much as I do what I see and I wouldn't want him starting on my team. He isn't better than average when average is QB #16. I stand by my opinion, you don't have to agree.

You can have your opinion. You can also say you wouldnt want him on your team. But 4300 yards and 33 TDs simply isn't, "Hes barely a starting caliber NFL QB". There's about 15 teams that WOULD love to have him.

He does throw a lot of pics (20) but his 88 QBR is good.
