They brought him in because they weren't comfortable with their depth behind Luck (which they were clearly correct to question, but should've been better prepared than to have Tolzien as their 2nd guy). They won't know Luck's future at least until he starts practicing, let alone get in a game. Some people just aren't quick healers, and it doesn't make sense to rush your franchise player's health.
