I'm fine with Suh having played his last game as a Lion. These suspensions are just not working for this team anymore. And I've been his biggest supporter but it is what it is.

Mayhew really should have taken Aaron Donald. Damn.

Suh will be sorely missed starting sunday. Might be a blessing in disguise for lions fans that he got suspended as the front office will get a great view on how different defense is with him missing.

I agree. Spoke of the possible silver lining elsewhere pertaining to Austin.

I am just not sure a one game sample will be a true parameter of what life without Suh will be like. I did like Swanson yesterday. I noticed he got beat bad once and some stunts confused him. Learning curve with any rookie there.

I don't conpletely agree. One game won't tell us fans or the F.O. whether this defense is better, the same, or worse than a defense with Suh. There were games this year where our D got torched with Suh in there(NE comes to mind) and games where our run D wasn't stellar(yeaterday). Dallas is no easy task, with or without Suh.

This is EXACTLY what happens when your team is run by clowns. Because they have continued to mismanage the cap year after year after year you have absolutely no negotiating leverage with Suh and will most likely have to give in to his demands and pay him a wage that is well in excess of the market, which was set only one year ago in the Atkins contract.... contracts of players under the old rookie deals was NOT the cause of the Lions salary cap woes, it is from all of these damn contract restructuring.

ZERO leverage = overpaying. Get used to it because thats the hole The Allen Park Clown Show has dug for the team. It's not going away and will actually only keep getting worse.

How did they mismanage? Firstly the DID get screwed by the rookie deals. Secondly, they managed to keep Calvin on our team and Stafford. And believe me someone wouldve been happy to take either of those two..then who would we have there? They manipulated the cap allwoing us room to sign guys like Tulloch, Tate, Inhedigbo, Reggie Bush, Mathis, Jones, etc. Those guys are all key guys over the past 2 years and very key for this year's playoffs. Please tell me what he could have done different?

They failed in the only way that matters in the real world - they didn't get Suh extended at a reasonable price. they failed to sell him on the team, the community, and his place in Detroit. Maybe a smarter, more persuasive GM could have gotten it done. Maybe they should have gotten him a competent DC much sooner so he believed in the team. Maybe nothing could have done it and Suh has always wanted to be elsewhere, but they hold the bag.

For me pushing money back when I always felt there never that one or two puzzle peices away from deep playoff runs. You hoist a Lombardi trophy 2 years ago or last year, then yes people forget about dumb moves.
These moves that brought some players mentioned brought a 4-12 and 7-9 season? I could justify maybe had they done it this off season. The DNA of this years team is not the 2011 playoff team.

For me either way pushing money back is not wise. Maybe smaller amounts, but having 9 million due to the piper next year when he may be playing for someone else is terrible way to do business. I think there are still huge hits coming for CJ and Matt in the coming years.

Some successful teams have restructured a big contract... key word (a) contract. Not 3 in a matter of 2 seasons.

This guy should be paid more than Watt? Do you guys even watch football?

I think you're stretching the meaning of "should" a little more literal than anyone was using it. Should Suh or Watt make more than my dad who served in the army for 18 years and retired a sargeant? Someone whos served with their life at risk to protect this country? No.

No one said Suh "should" be paid more than Watt, relative to value. Watt, right now, is the best defensive player in the NFL. We all know being the best doesnt translate to highest paid. Ever. But, taking into account what Watt makes, the cap inflation, our current success with Suh as our defensive center piece, then yes. The Lions "should" pay Suh more than Watt.

So Gandy, what youre saying is you don't want either Calvin or Stafford on our team. Which is it?
Also, they made a darn good run this year. Are they a few pieces away...yes, but does that mean they should let go their best 2 players.
IMO keeping Stafford and Calvin was of the utmost importance. He did that, and managed to fill in the blanks accordingly and build a competitive team. I'm not sure what he could have done differently or better and still made that happen. Any ideas? I'd love to hear them.

I think the reality is Suh will be gone. He has a huge ego and wants a bidding war. He never cared about team....thats why he said he was going to let his agent pick his team, which means he wants the most money. If the Lions were close it wouldn't matter, no loyalty discount. Some team will give him 20 million per year, that team will not make the playoffs.

I think at heart most of us want Suh back( I know I do) but I think it(him not returning) will be a blessing in the long run.

In the real world the only way Suh extends is at a non reasonable price. You want to sell him on the community of Detroit? Thats pretty funny. Detroit is a shithole.

A superstar represents hope. Loyalty represents pride. A winning team in a city that has witnessed nothing but failure(in much more than football)for a decade or more deserves aspirations.

I'm not from Detroit. I'm not from Michigan. I've never even been to either. I hold value in the importance of that city as to how far this country has come. If overpaying Suh(I understand it isn't he alone) could offer sunshine in a dark time in a city that helped build this country, I'll pitch in a couple of bucks myself.

Suh is the face of a defense that was more than formidable. One of the best Detroit has ever seen. Is this really the player you let walk because of cap concerns? People acknowledge his high monetary value league wide. Why wouldn't a team that is potentially on the cusp, look into retaining his services?

I am a lifelong Lions fan but would be more excited for a city of bad news than my own selfish fanatical hope for a National Football League championship.

LP...how in the heck did you get stuck being a Lions fan if youre not even from there? You could have had any team?

My Grandmother was the biggest sports fan I've ever known. She would constantly discuss whatever sport that was currently in season. I didn't see her often from year to year but Thanksgiving was always a constant. She was a Lions fan or at least supported them entirely. 100 years later, I still scream at every bad play call, refs call, or phone call during the game.

Barry Sanders was also pretty persuasive.

Growing up in a city without the NFL, I do take pride in knowing I didn't flock to whatever team had won recently or often.
Still kick myself in the ass from time to time too.

I'd have taken a shot at it. The Detroit area has plenty of nice places to live and things to do. Every great athlete with an ego should want to leave a legacy. Few athletes these days have the chance to really connect with a community and thus to become legends. Look at Favre in Green Bay, who blew it.

I'd have taken him down to the giant poster of himself near the stadium and told him that with the Big 3 coming back, this place was going to look a hell of a lot nicer in 10 years and drastically better in 20. And I want that poster to be right there, next to a Sanders poster, in 20 years. I want the name 'Suh' to get his grandkid elected mayor because his granddaddy was the greatest Lion. I want him not only to have a team for life, but a home for life. I assure him that when he retires there will be a front-office job waiting for him, to take him as far as his own desire and ability can go. I'd have held up Brady as the prime example of a great player who already had all the money he needed, who took less overall so that the organization could put a complete team around him, and asked him to sign as the highest-paid DT.

I look at how stupidly the Albert Pujols situation was handled in St. Louis and think that if great organizations like the Cardinals can blow it that badly, what do bad organizations like the Lions really do?

Calm down little fella, no reason to always come in hot, guns a blazin' like you seem to do.

When was the last time you spent a weekend in downtown Detroit for a home game? It's a fuckin' riot and the D is rapidly improving. It's not the same city it was 15 years ago at all...

St. Louis refused to overpay the aging superstar on the downslide...which turned out to be exactly the right move.

They didnt blow it they nailed it. It's never about 1 guy, its about the team.
