Great players make big money. Richard Sherman was a 5th round pick and he's about to be paid like the top CB in the NFL. The contract Suh is about to get was gonna be what it's gonna be no matter what. The good news is he's ours. The last thing I want to do is watch our best players go to other teams because we're too cheap to pay them. These are the fucking Lions after all. 0-16 and we're worried about re-signing the best defensive player in the NFL. Not me.

There you have it. Dr. Eviler just broke it down. Personally, I wouldn't want to lose the guy but to me, the Lions cant win and have this kind of money tied up in just three players. They could be getting an extra 3 or 4 guys if they traded him and more money to work with.

And if they're good then what?? Trade them for 3 or 4 more players? Then when they get good and want to be paid, trade them? Are we the Marlins now?

I bet you there is no way any of the teams with smart GMs would keep Suh and pay all that cash. From a business standpoint, it seems as if the trade-off would be most beneficial to the Lions considering the circumstances.

Suh isn't the best defensive player in the league.

Lol. (Face palm)

C'mon Swarmm I'm not saying trade every good player because they are good and will eventually want to be paid. I'm just saying that no team should be happy about giving 3 guys tremendous contracts, while making it very difficult to even build the team.

You guys are ridiculous to even be happy about resigning this dude and having Jay Z running the show. These dudes are going to cripple the team even more.

Dude, you tried telling me we had an Elite QB all season. Let's not toss ridiculous around on account of wanting Suh to get his rookie deal again with a 10%cost of living raise. (I don't care who anyone's agent is. Slick Rick could be in there talking to Mayhew, Im good so long as we lock up our best player.)

That $15.4m cap hit is likely the smallest that he will carry over the years of the new contract. Atkins cap numbers never even get close to that. Restructured deals are the reason we are in cap hell every year, not the outrageous rookie deals of years past.

Right here is the biggest problem the Lions will face signing Suh to an extension. If Suh signs a 5 year deal, even at the exact same contract he signed as a rookie, the smallest his cap hit will be is 15.4 million (if i'm reading what dr. evil said correctly) and that is the 1st year of the deal and it will only go up from there.

To put it in perspective -- Jared Allen was the highest paid defensive player last year at 14.28 million. Can the Lions afford to take a cap hit of 10% more than the highest paid player in the NFL on defense when he plays DT?

The pros of the deal is you would lock up one of the best DT in football. The cons would be, you will have to cut salary elsewhere on the team and if a player like Ansah blows up you may not have the money to re-sign him once his rookie deal is done.

I did Smitty, but when he started CB playing shitty, I took my assessment back in stating that he was playing at an elite level during the first eight games or so. You win. He's not elite.

It makes more sense to say he is "one" of the best, not the best.

I was at a Jay-Z show in Lincoln and J shouted Suh out mid-concert. This was a couple months ago. At that point I figured it was a done deal.

The problem here is what happens to our other good players a few years from now when the team has all its money in three guys? Let Fairley go? He'll be watching this. Ansah? We want him to be the best DE in football and if he gets close, he'll command his. And some people want to add Clowney. Lol.

What if Levy puts up another really good season? Tolluch? Will the team roll with a cheap RB later? We want Geenwood to be ome an instant starter but if he puts up great numbers, he'll be asking for a lot of money considering his situation. The team cant even keep Delmas. Houston's and Quin's salaries look like tons of money since the team is so strapped. We are now talking about getting Houston out of here because he is not playing to the level of his contract. That will continue moving forward. Everyone wants to replace Reiff with an amazing LT or get an amazing RT. How would the team afford that down the line?

To me, by signing Suh to a huge contract means that the team will attempt to win with three guys, while finding cheap players to fill other roles, while struggling to hang on to other good players. Not good. But if it works, hey, I'll take it.

Suh isn't the best defensive player in the league.

I wonder about observational protocols that occur in people's minds when they make statements like this.

Maybe they'll see it when the coaching goes from a 2 to a 6 or 7.

There isn't a defensive player in the league that gets the attention of Suh.

There isn't an offensive player in the league that gets the attention of CJ.

If you want to fix the Lions cap, draft a QB at #10 and trade Stafford.

Thank God Levy wasn't voted to the Pro bowl or we might have had to trade him. We have to be careful no one gets too good on this team or we might have to pay them more money.

If you want to fix the Lions cap, draft a QB at #10 and trade Stafford.

And that will help the team how? What QB that will be available at #10 or in this draft at all will be better than Stafford and make the Lions a better team?

Some people seem to forget what the Lions QB situation has been for the past decade or so plus before Stafford got here. Does he throw too many interceptions? Yeah, but that is a product of the team as well, as they have him throwing 650-700 times a year. Outside of Calvin though -- it isn't as if any of his WRs are helping him out any. We are near the top for dropped passes on a yearly basis.

If you ask me -- it is much easier to replace a DT than it is to replace a QB. Now if Detroit was a team who won with their defense, like say Seattle. I'd be all for it. Detroit's defense is nowhere near Seattle though and would have to replace almost all of the back 7 to try and become a defense like Seattle.

There isn't a defensive player in the league that gets the attention of Suh.

Once again -- I LOVE Suh, but every team that has a stud on the DL has a player who gets the attention of Suh. Geno Atkins is one. JJ Watt is another. Julius Pepper for years has dealt with double teams the majority of the game. DeMarcus Ware.

We just get to see the attention Suh receives on a game to game basis.

It's times like this why we need a group Madden league to see who really knows their shit.

It isn't about getting too good. It is the absurd rookie pay scale they had in the past. Because of where Suh was drafted -- he was made the highest paid DT in the NFL without ever playing a snap.

Where do you go from there when trying to re-sign him? If he would take a 5 year 60 million dollar deal again -- I'd do it in a heartbeat. If he would take the 5 year 55 million dollar deal Geno Atkins just signed, I'd do it in a heartbeat. What if he is asking for 5 years 75 million or 5 years 80 million. Do you give him a deal that would make him the highest paid defensive player, not only at his position, but in the NFL, when he plays DT?

I agree and said the same thing. Now I'm just being a smart ass to entertain myself. I don't want to trade Levy.

You're one smart ass Rob Base and I assume you know everything?

People really think Suh is the only player that commands a lot of attention? That's laughable. Its also laughable to trade a QB away instead of a DT. Now, all of a sudden, Suh makes up the whole Lions team? Please.
