I really don't think it needs to be in DC & those of us who don't live in the DC area should not be too concerned about it. Really what I want to see is an electric atmosphere that hasn't been part of the Redskins culture in a while. Sure part of this has to do w/ winning but the setup at FedEx also contributes to this.
FedEx is awful - they need to build a stadium that is loud & provides a great experience for the fans. Doesn't matter if it is in DC or VA (to heck w/ MD - they already have another team). All of the folks I know there live in VA so I am partial to that area (assuming it doesn't lead to traffic nightmares).
Two negatives against DC - 1. their politicians are going to try to tie this to the name change & 2. getting there is a pain for NOVA folks. Sure - they will state that it is near the Metro but lots of folks tailgate so this is not an option. In any case I think that going back to DC is a longshot.
the fans at FedEx when its not 50% the opposing team are not into the games.
they are tabbed wine and cheese fans
the team has to stay in a team hotel Saturdays before home games, the only team in the NFL that has to do that because of the traffic and how far the HQ is from the stadium.
Its the quietest stadium I have ever been in.
Games are pretty expensive too
The Skins do not have a home field advantage like the other 31 teams.
They need to make a concerted effort to get the blue collar fans back into seats... make it accessible to all parts of DC including those who rely on public transportation.... if not it will be more of the same...
I believe that fans would be more into the game based on 1. more winning (obviously) & 2. a stadium that is built to be fan friendly & noisy - FedEx is neither. It was just a bad design from day one.
As far as elite fans - some of that is unavoidable due to rising ticket cost & this issue is not unique to DC. I have been to other NFL stadiums & seen a lot worse. As for being expensive - pretty much the norm for most NFL towns. Again - winning & better preparation of the new stadium will help give the team more of a home team advantage. You can't blame Snyder for the initial poor design of FedEx - that falls on Cooke. However you can blame him for some of the revisions which were also pretty poor.
To be blunt public transportation is not a priority & this is not about making the team accessible to everyone - it is about making money. Again - lots of folks like to tailgate so public transportation is not a big deal to them. BTW - move the stadium to VA & you don't have that issue w/ players & hotel stays - everything would be in VA.
We will see.
