The Heineke vs Haskins vs Allen vs Alex Smith comparisons dont bode well for Haskins, Sty.

Unless, of course, he matures an awful lot over the next few seasons.

There’s precedent for that, of course: Rich Gannon, Tannenhill, Josh Allen, Goff, etc., but it all depends on Haskins.


As it stands right now for Haskins:
The college student taking advanced math classes made significantly better decisions than Haskins did,

The grizzled vet who has been in the same system for as long as haskins had, and had literally one good leg managed to go 5-1 in the same system Haskins failed at,

And the career backup made better reads while he played then Haskins did, and had a slightly better qb rating.

First round draft pick qb’s need to come in and light it up, or at least show some “it factor,” in their first year. Heinecke showed it in 67 minutes of game film. Haskins hasnt showed it in 2 years.

I can’t say I see why.

Great? I think he could be an average to good QB but great is a reach IMO.

I expect DH to fail because that is what he has shown to this point. I hope he fails because he is no longer a Redskin.

He’s about to go to his 14th Championship Game.
He’s won 6 Super Bowls.
He makes everybody on the team better.
He may not be the most physocally gifted qb of all time. He may not have the gaudiest stats of all time (though I bet his are approaching anybodys/everybodys).

Had these rules been in effect during other times the records he now has would have been untouchable.
The Super Bowl/ NFL championships same thing different era.
Back in the day QB's didn't have to make everybody better, they just were.
Had he played then his career likely would have ended much earlier, relatively speaking.
Again, he's the GOAT of his time because that's the measuring stick. Nothing more

I would be against that . After 22 you are done with cap ramifications . Restructure means more guaranteed money later and I would rather be done with it

So, $24.4 M if he stays this year, $5.4 dead next season. Or $10.8 dead this year, $0 next if cut.

If they added a year, the $51M remaining could be split into three years. $18 M this year, $18 M next, and $18 M the next. $7.2 Dead Money next year.

Why would Smith do it? If he is cut, I know he counts $10.8 million against the cap, but he doesn’t receive any more money. If he is cut and goes to another team, he would have to learn the new system and beat out whoever is there. I do believe that here is the best chance he has to start this year. Would he sign for $18 anywhere else?

Washington would spend $18M on him this year when they could cut him and just spend $10.8 M, but if they want to keep him, $18 M is $6.4 M less. The rookie they draft would make so little that $18 plus that is nothing.

And then $7.2 million that money next year versus $10.8 million dead this year, what’s the difference? I understand that next year would be zero instead of $7.2 but a hit is going to be absorbed one of these two years. The drafted QB would still be on the rookie contract.

This is all assuming they DO draft and don’t get an NFL ready QB now and DON’T trade for Watson or a veteran for less than $7.2 M they like. (10.8 + 7.2 = 18 M.) And it’s presumes the injury that Smith had was a bone bruise that will heal as opposed to strain from overuse that will be re-aggravated.

If they are serious about getting him to be either in the front office role or quarterback coach, having him an extra year mat push that forward. Otherwise, he would go for cheaper I guess to the Bay Area or the Chiefs, as a backup and then coach there. I think he clearly wants to play. I know that he can’t just dictate that because of his age, talent, and an injury.

when you restructure a deal , years on the back end become guaranteed and stay on the cap . (or portions of that depending on whats negotiated ) the team isnt the only beneficiary of a renegotiation. Part of that incentive to do that is to take non guaranteed money and make it guaranteed for the player hence it stays on the cap and can be dead cap space in future years

so i would rather just cut the cord and be done with it in 2 years then have it drag out for more
