They have to re-sign him and honestly Alex right now has a lot of power in the negotiating process because his agent knows they have to try and keep him.

If the 49ers finish 14-2 or 13-3 with the #2 or even by some chance the #1 seed in the NFC they can't send the wrong message to the locker room by letting the guy the organization owes a lot to for such success.

I know that sounds crazy that the 49ers owe Alex anything, but think back to earlier this off-season. Alex was a free agent QB leading what was basically our training camps. He worked his butt off to learn as much about Harbaughs playbook as he could and then coached the offense on it. He even spent money out of his own pocket to secure the facility and even helped guys with crash space. The fact that he did all that and it led to the success of this team puts the 49ers in a bad spot to negotiate from.

If they let Alex walk or low ball him it will send the wrong message across the locker room and undermine everything this team has stood for all season. The one saving grace is Alex has never been selfish person. He won't hold out or push for more money that he is worth. The 2 sides will work out a fair deal for both parties and life will go in.

The loser in all this Kaepernick. He is may never be the full time starter in a 49ers uniform. Alex is only 27, and if he continues to grow in this offense like expected then he is probably the guy for the next 6-8 years at least.

imo this works great for kap. he gets to sit back and learn the offense.

A 3 year deal for 8-10 million a year wouldn't bother me.

I believe he'll have an even better year next season and it does buy more time to get CK (or even someone else ready). And keep in mind it's not like we HAVE to start him if someone outplays him.

If I was the team and we get a first round playoff bye I would extend both Smith and Rodgers during that bye week before the game. That will give them that little extra incentive to work harder given the morale boost and vote of confidence.

A 3 year deal at 8-10 (let's say 10 to max it out) better not bother anyone. It would be a significant pay cut for him based on this year's salary.

We will not get him for under 6M per year. It's likely going to cost us closer to 7 or 7.5M.

I don't understand why everyone is claiming that we HAVE to sign Smith. We don't HAVE to do anything. He doesn't have all the leverage like some are saying.

Agreed

Neither side really has leverage over the other. Barring something unforeseen (like a healthy Peyton Manning becoming available) Smith is the best option for the team for the immediate future and Smith won't find a better situation than where he's at now nor will he want to break the roll that he's on.

So they'll likely come together for a fair deal at some point.

not getting this same read? its a win-win to re-sign him but don't feel this thread is saying we HAVE to?

as well as he's improved this season, my opinion is he's closer to 'stop gap' vice 'QB of the future'. that said, it IS reasonable to give him another off-season to take another big step, so i'll try to lay off this opinion.

I was saying we have to re-sign him. I think it would upset the team chemistry not to reward him for everything he contributed to this season. I mean the guy had 2 feet out the door and no one blamed him, but then Harbaugh came and talked him into staying. After that Alex went all in and above and beyond his call to duty. He did a lot during the off-season, and you're just being naive if you don't think the Camp Alex stuff is a huge reason we are 10-2.

The leaders of our team will want him back. It will do more harm than good to make sure he is back.

I'm not saying the organization needs to hand cuff their future to him with a 7 year 62 million dollar deal, but I am saying we have to offer more than 2 years and more than 6 million a year. I'd say 3 years at around 8 million a year would be fair. I'd say even at 3 years and 10 million the 49ers are getting a good deal. He has out played several QB's making 12 million or more this season.

everyone agrees it makes sense for all these reasons, but do we HAVE to have him back? of course not.

the question is back for how long and for how much? we can only wait and see?

sure we dont have to resign smith. if we can upgrade the position i'm all for it, but free agency is pretty thin. we have enough holes on the offense, not resigning smith creates an even bigger hole, even if for some off reason you don't view smith as a viable starter.

Read the thread again Deep. While skimming it I saw at least one person claim that we HAVE to sign him.

Under what circumstances would you NOT want to resign him...he's obviously proved it performance wise, unless you think he's hit his peak, and can't get any better next year.

No we don't "have" to do anything, but this is NOT about leverage, its about doing the smart thing. This guy has finally been given the chance to gel with something positive...look at the progress he's made this year, imagine what he could do next year? ... Resigning him is the smart and most likely cheapest option. You think we can get something equal or better for the same or less money??? I don't think Harbaugh wants to let this guy go...Harbaugh has empathy and sees similarities.

This is the FIRST year Smith has shown ANYTHING more than brief moments of brilliance...I'd like to see him continue, it's like he's had a chance to go back to 2006 with the set up any new QB really needed.

Ok I will say no we don't have to re-sign him, but we do have to make him an offer. If Alex wants to walk then so be it the locker room will understand, but they have to make an offer and show an attempt to bring him back.

I would say you are very very wrong. He signed this year for 5M. That was based on his performance from 2005 to 2010. Why would you think it's fair to expect him to take a SIGNIFICANT pay cut (from 5M per year to between 2.67 and 3.33M per year). The Niners are getting a FANTASTIC deal at either of those numbers and frankly, if that's what they've offered him, it's insulting.

It's essentially
2011: "Hey Alex, we want you to come in and compete for the starting job, we are actively pursuing other options though. We promise you nothing. We will give you 5 million dollars for 1 year to do this."

2012: "Hey Alex, great season last year. You QB'd us to a division title (first round bye?) and had by far the best season of your career. We'd like to reward you by signing you to a 3 year deal that will pay you roughly half of what you made last year annually."

How is this reasonable? If he signs a 3 year contract, you should expect it to be in the 18M to 20M range. Not the 8-10.

Imac - I think the OP is saying 8-10 mil per year, not for three years - at least that is how I'm reading it...

Reading it again, you're right. My apologies. It was mentioned earlier in the thread a few times about *M over 3 years, and it seems like whenever a new Smith contract comes up people feel he should get in the 4M range, so I'm a little on edge about that.
