Spare a thought for Mark Howe who has to follow the Caps around until Ovi ties and passes Gordie.
I don't like listening to Craig Laughlin on the TV, I couldn't imagine having to hang out with him away from the rink.
The Path to Beating The Great One
So, we are here in 2020, with Ovechkin likely staring down finishing the season somewhere around 710 goals and being just short or past Mike Gartner for 7th all-time in goals. Here's a potential look at the next few years:
- 2021 > Age 35, scores about 35 goals, moves to 745, passes Esposito, Dionne, and Hall to 4th all-time
- 2022 > Age 36, scores about 30 goals, moves to 775, passes Jagr to 3rd all-time
- 2023 > Age 37, scores about 30 goals, moves to 805, passes Howe to 2nd all-time
Ovechkin closes out 2022 with a hat trick. Moves to tied for second in the league in goals.
After scoring a hat trick against their kids, the Canadiens moms asked for a picture with Ovi.
Same token if Gretzky didn't play a WHA season or have the 94 lockout he probably has at least another 60 NHL goals. If a strike had not cancelled his rookie season, another strike had not shortened his 2013 season, and COVID didn't cancel many games, it's very likely that Ovechkin would have passed Gretzky sometime this month or next.
And then we'd be talking about whether or not he could make it to the never touched 1,000 goal plateau.
As it stands... he has (Jay Beagle) goals left to the record.
Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Ovechkin had the 2012 lockout to deal with. Also, if he had played against the shit goalies of the first half of Gretzky's career or didn't have to play under the 'Gretzky Rule' of offsetting penalties, he'd probably have 150 more NHL goals.Same token if Gretzky didn't play a WHA season or have the 94 lockout he probably has at least another 60 NHL goals.
Yeah, eloco already said that.Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Ovechkin had the 2012 lockout to deal with. Also, if he had played against the shit goalies of the first half of Gretzky's career or didn't have to play under the 'Gretzky Rule' of offsetting penalties, he'd probably have 150 more NHL goals.
It's why these conversations don't ultimately matter.Yeah, eloco already said that.
And if Ovie had a pile of headhunters skating around to destroy his body and had to skate with a bodyguard instead of capable players in every position who knows how many good feeds he gets to his sweet spot?
And what if Bossy had played more than ten injury plagued seasons? Or Mario?
Record is the record though.
