Well yes, you're right, against the weaker teams he should shine. But he wasn't exactly shinning vs the redskins, the cards(IIRC), Browns... not saying he was bad in those games, but games he could've certainly "gone off" according to our own personal image of Smith.

Yeah, but we've been down the wall before. I think last season we were top 5/10 or something in the pass rush department? by the stats apparently we were but ask the casual fan, H to No in most replies. We've seen PH and now Brooks always try to burn the edges but never in time, especially in pressure cookers. We've been lucky not to get burn this year. Take the Ravens game, our offense needed help, the defense played as well as you need them to but when we needed to get to Flacco, we just couldn't. When we need the sacks, we can't get there in time.

IDK, maybe I'm living in the past, but that Ravens game certainly opened my eyes. We need to bring down the QB in pressure moments, if not, we won't win in the long run vs the offenses of GB & NO.

I feel ya on that right there.

If it is our destiny to meet GB, without pressure on Rodgers it is going to be a short day for them and a long one for us.

Just gotta look at the NYG-Pats superbowl for evidence. Giants pass rush were on brady all day and it really helped them in the end.

And before the FG winning drive, the giants were all over Rodgers in the game... We could just hope our pass rush can break through like theirs did(and cover Nelson for god's sake!)

This is turning into a monster OLB draft. Von Miller, Aldon Smith, Ryan Kerrigan, and Brooks Reed are all doing damage. Justin Houston had 3 sacks, 2 QB hits, and a FF yesterday as well.

Don't get me wrong, in retrospect I love the Aldon Smith pick. But I think we could have had the same results had we gone with my choice (the player I wanted), which was Robert Quinn.

That darn Rodgers is so accurate though; even under pressure.

Agreed!

With that offense you have to cover and apply pressure. Between Rodgers & his 6+ receivers, there are simply no weaknesses to exploit.

The pass rush was a big problem in that game. We held them to a relatively low point total, but they didn't need more. And we couldn't get off the field on D in the second half. If that happens against Rodgers or Brees, it's goodnight for us.

I'm very curious what would happen with us against GB. Newhouse has really struggled at LT, and I'd like to think Aldon could really take advantage. That's about the only hope we have of keeping them in check, though. Rodgers is just too good if he's not getting pressured. The good news is that we'll be in nickel most of that game, which should have Aldon out of the field whether he's still backing up Haralson or not.

I will be the first to say that i didn't think this was a great draft class for OLB's. I thought the previous 2 years were better, but this class has impressed me thus far.

That's what we need Aldon to do... his performance was good vs the rams, but i would rate it great if it were against NO or GB.

Justin Smith and Ray McDonald also needs to get their hands in too. Wish we had some blitz schemes but oh well.

agree, expected some LB blitzes about two games ago? with the run D holding well, you'd think we show a few more blitzes? hoping to see a FEW more each game, rest of the regular season. include the MLB's so our players can work on execution. its not just LB's, cause wouldn't the linemen have to 'open lanes' for the blitzer?

One of the few times I would want the 49ers to play a road game, in Green Bay, where they might do better. As a friend of mine (a Packer fan) said, shaking his head "Building your team to win on the road in January, but not so much at home, curious"

this current team was already 'built' for the run, just happen Harbaugh's style is ok with it. Harbaugh likely saw this and one big reason he signed?

an effective run game is good at home, away, in rain, snow, wind, or combination thereof. we don't need to be the #1 rushing team, just effective enough so D's respect it.

I was thinking about this the other day. For some reason I think I might rather play the Packers at GB. Rodgers likely won't be AS effective in adverse weather, even if he's used to it. We'll use the run game to keep him off the field.

Thought about it a long time ago.... IF Green Bay stays true and delivers some iffy weather elements come gameday, that'll be SF Best shot at beating the packers(not the only, but perhaps the best)

if Rogers won't be as effective in cold weather, then what will Smith be? yeah we could lean run, but we'll still need to pass. knowing our strategy would be to run, they could stack the box and force the pass.

unless its snowing HARD, seems to me WR's have a bigger edge on CB's? their WR's have much more experience catching/running in cold conditions. as it is, their receivers are more sure handed.

cold conditions isn't a crazy thought, but rather play them at home where our players are comfortable.
