Some rather baffling projections. Brewers winning 90+? Mariners 5 games better than Houston? Padres winning 88??

What does BB-Ref even use as a basis for these?
This has been an issue in years past and I guess it hasn't changed. Their projections are primitive compared to other options, to be taken with a grain of salt. Part of it from what I recall is they heavily weigh how well a team has recently done i.e. team record in the past year or two into their algorithm, so a team losing Corbin Burnes or Juan Soto for less proven players in the offseason is liable to appear overestimated.

Honestly, it never even crossed my mind that they had their own projected standings. And they use Marcel projections, which I forgot even existed. It uses the last 3 years of MLB data and regresses it to the mean.

I've always preferred Steamer/ZiPS/ATC projections.

Fangraphs pegs the Yanks at 91 wins, BRef has them at 71

Your mileage may vary indeed.
