Obviously lots more season to play....the NL is still wide open (Rizzo, Bryant, Murphy, others)

But the AL it's gotta be Ortiz, right? Can a DH win one?

I guess Donaldson has a good case again, might depend on who makes the playoffs. Altuve too.

Trout or Donaldson, possibly Altuve. Love what Ortiz is doing, but I'm not sure he's been the Sox MVP (Betts/Bogaerts/JBJ are having some pretty strong seasons themselves). Ian Desmond, Machado and Francisco Lindor are also putting together some great seasons.

I don't think there should be any debate that Donaldson/Trout are the two best players in baseball right now. Donaldson might be the best 3B since Schmidt right now, and Trout's been playing at a historic level for 4.5 years now.

Altuve was a very good 2B in 2014-15, but he's putting up a 162 wRC+ at 2B. If he keeps it up, he could end up with one of the greatest offensive seasons by a 2B in recent memory (though Murphy could join him). The last time a 2B posted a wRC+ of 160 or higher was Joe Morgan in '76 (though Kent posted a 159 in 2000 if you ignore my arbitrary cutoff). It's crazy how Altuve's gone from being a slap hitter to an above average power hitter in such a short time frame.

Probably Trout again. Still technically the MVP of that team or LAA would probably be another 10 games back out of the division.

I also like Altuve if the Astros can surge ahead of the Rangers for first. The Astros started out TERRIBLE when they were division favorites prior to the season I believe. That may be reason enough and he already beat out Cano for the all star game who is having one of his better seasons.

Donaldson of course is in the mix.

Just don't see Ortiz claiming that one even though he's sometimes considered a fan favorite. That team has been getting same crazy production from Betts/Xander.

Unless Trout/Donaldson bomb or their teams just go to crap I don't see either one getting the pass.

Not sure what you mean here, only one can win. And Trout's team has already gone to crap.

Feel it's pretty simple what he meant.

It's gonna be one of those two unless both become John Ryan Murphy soon

the Angels were pretty shitty in 2013 and 2015, and he barely missed out on winning MVP those years.

OK, but Trout's team sucks. So doesn't that mean Donaldson wins again? Also how can neither one 'get the pass'. One of them will.

No, because as Nava just pointed out above....Trout has already been very close twice with horseshit teams. If his numbers stack up the voters love him.

OK maybe I was a little nitpicky, but the guy said he can't see either getting a pass....one of them has to.

But I do get it, it's probably down to those 2 again, and if Trout's numbers are noticeably better than Donaldson's they may indeed give it to him even on a shitty team.

NL I'll go Bryant over Rizzo. KB has been more consistent all year and is more valuable on D because he can play so many positions. AL I'll go Altuve but Trout will probably end up winning

Can't give it to Ortiz for only playing half the game. He would have to be absolutely obliterating everyone else in batting to have merit, and he isn't.

At this point, though, it's very close between Altuve, Trout, and Donaldson. 1-2-3 in WAR and OBP. Donaldson has the edge in power numbers (HR, RBI, SLG), while Altuve leads the league in BA and steals, while still offering very solid power numbers himself. If Houston makes the playoffs, I think Altuve gets it.

Yup. He's pretty much the consensus #1 player in baseball and has been for several years. As long as he continues to play like it, he'll be getting his share of votes.

I agree Ortiz doesn't have a case over guys like Donaldson/Trout/Machado/Lindor/etc, but that "half" of the game is more valuable than the other, even at the "defense-first" positions.

Sucks for Altuve...in the NL he'd probably be the frontrunner.
