This will be a fun thread. For now we compare the teams to expectations prior to the season beginning. As the season progresses we adjust accordingly.
Quick one liner on pre-season expectations:
Broncos: Many expected the team to struggle on offense but the defense to keep them in games.
Chiefs: Very popular pick to win the AFC West on the back of an efficient offense and stout defense.
Chargers: A few picked them to win the Division but most off season discussion on the Chargers focussed on relocation.
Raiders: A team many expected to take significant steps forward under JDR and with a talented young roster.
After three weeks:
Broncos: They're right where we expected. The offense has struggled perhaps a little more than I expected but honestly the defense has been better than I expected as well. That defense is ferocious. The turnovers, the pressure. Overall they're about where we thought they'd be. And to be fair, they're probably a little ahead of where the general NFL fandom thought they'd be. Not a lot of people gave them a chance to go into Kansas City under the circumstances surrounding that game and come away with a win. 3-0 is better than 2-1, that's for sure.
Chiefs: Given the pre-season hubris we saw from this team's fans on places like Arrowhead Addict or Arrowhead Pride, this team has taken a nosedive. Now if you read those sites they are heading for the life rafts. Some of the writers are trying to spin a positive narrative but the fans have been dealt a serious blow of confidence. Their 1-2 start is a colossal letdown and a tough out this weekend @ Cincy means 1-3 is a very real possibility. They've claimed their schedule softens up toward the end but they are making those projections based on 2014 finishes. If you haven't sold your Chiefs stock yet you probably won't recover.
Chargers: Honestly they are about where I guessed they'd be after 3. This isn't a team you can count on to win week in and week out. They are wildly inconsistent. One week they can rip an opponent a new one and then the following week step on their own cranks and embarrass themselves. I always consider them a threat any given week, but this isn't a team I'd expect to win 10+ games. They just aren't consistent enough nor do they have the juice on defense to complement a potentially top-flight offense.
Raiders: Perhaps the most intriguing team in the division is the Raiders. We have a few really good Raiders fans around these parts (I almost threw up in my mouth a little saying that but let's give some credit where due) and I know a 2-1 one start has them up late looking for 8+ more potential wins and playoff spot even this early in the season. And why not? That team showed some serious fight in these last two wins. The defense isn't great, but it has its moments and makes enough plays to keep them in it. Offensively they are a time bomb I have a feeling is about to unload on the league. I'm not sure how this will end, but one thing I think is true about them: They're not push over anymore.
The AFC West action this week:
Broncos vs Vikings: Broncos should take it. 4-0.
Raiders @ Bears: I think the Raiders keep it going here. 3-1.
Chargers vs Browns: Chargers at home against a toothless offense. 2-2.
Chiefs @ Bengals: Bengals early season wave too much for a reeling Chiefs team. 1-3.
