Ortiz is a "known" user because his name was leaked on the list of 103 from the preliminary testing back in 2003 or 2004. Who else was on that list? Hall of Famers Robbie Alomar and Pedro Martinez and future HOFer Todd Helton. So if we're using that list as why he's known, he won't be the first.

If those guys were on that list, you make a fair point. Pedro was a 1st ballot, too.

For reelz, though, @soxfan1468927, I'm interested in your take on the David Ortiz/HOF debate. @StanMarsh51's as well.

Had a discussion once with Rock who is of the opinion that Señor Ortiz will be a 1st ballot HOF'er. Personally, I think getting in is somewhat iffy, and that 1st ballot would be shocking. He'd be the first full-time DH to make the hall and the first known PED user to make the hall. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets in (I think he should), but I'd be pretty shocked if he got in on the 1st ballot.
I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I think he should be a HOFer, albeit borderline, but would be shocked if he gets in first ballot. I think there is hype as he's retiring, but that will wear off a bit in 4+ years when they have to sit down and vote.

I agree with all of that. I'll add that I think Bonds/Arod/Clemens should be in the HOF. Not Pete Rose, though; fuck that guy.
I don't think Pete should be reinstated into baseball, but he should be in the HOF. It's a museum of baseball history. Put him in.

Interesting take.

What would being reinstated into baseball get him other than inclusion in the HOF?

I heard he has a daily regimen of injecting stem cells freshly squoze from aborted baby feti.

That would explain the facial deformity. His second career as a Bond villian is going to be great.

Let's look at the facts:

His best year prior to 2017 was last year where he hit 19 homers at AAA and 4 in the majors.

That's 23 homers over 505 plate appearances or about one homer every 22 plate appearances.

NOW, in the majors, facing major league pitching, he has 13 homers over 104 plate appearances or a homer every 8 plate appearances. Seems rather implausible.

Combine this with the fact that we've seen this startling onset of power just last year on, surprise surprise, the Yankees with Gary Sanchez. Prior to last year, Gary, like Aaron, had a year where he was hitting approximately one homer every 22 plate appearances. All of a sudden he's called up and proceeds to hit a homer every 11 plate appearances and forces himself into consideration for rookie of the year.

So we're expected to believe that in back to back years the Yankees have produced rookies that have homered at a record clip despite having only moderate success in the minors? Really?

Instead of testing Eric Thames 5 times a week, maybe MLB should send some of its cup holders to the Bronx.

I don't know what Aaron Judge is or isn't taking but he is 6'7" and 285lbs and pretty athletic. If he hits the ball it's going to go pretty far

Okay. I accept that the power increase is some evidence that Ortiz may have been on the roids.

That means you agree that Judge's power increase is evidence he is doping, right?

I read what you wrote, I don't understand what it has to do with what I wrote though. Dirt likes to say that the Red Sox "had a chance, and now the window is closed". I like to remind him that the Red Sox won a World Series in that window. What was the point in injecting yourself into that? To point out that David Ortiz did steroids? Whoopie. Has nothing to do with mine and Dirt's charming back and forth.

I gave you explicit instructions on how to handle this and you failed. Failed like a certain Red Sox slugger fails a urine test

Judge lost his job to Ron Coomer?

Not that this needs to be repeated but, since there are impressionable young minds that read this board and are not familiar with your fake news posts:

1. Ron Coomer wasn't on the Twins in 2001, 2002 or 2003 so there really is no way Papi could have "lost his job" to him.
2. Papi hit 20 homers in 2002 or roughly 1 homer in every 23 PA clip. The year before he was hitting a homer once every 19 PAs.
3. Papi had "slightly" better line-up protection in Boston hitting in front of Manny.
