As a Niner fan, this is great news! As a football fan, it's kind of sad. The man was a monster player, 10 seasons, the three-time AP defensive player of the year, and can go ahead and get fitted for the well-deserved gold jacket.

Great player and I hope for the sake of his family and friends he lays off the roids. He could seriously injury another human being again.

After the Snooperbowl a couple of years ago, he was thinking of retiring then. McVay convinced him to come back. This has been in the works for some time. He is going out on his terms and Father time is undefeated!!

If I had this amount of scratch in the bank, the retirement issue would be moot. Geez, Louise!! One hundred and fifty million and change he has made.

He made about half that. Uncle Sam made the other half.

Yeah, at some point when you're that wealthy, shouldn't long term health supersede an extra 10,20 mil or so?

True. $80 million is still a nice chunk of change to make the decision easy.

I never held it against Barry Sanders, and would not for Donald either. He is more accomplished than Sanders was as well. What does he have left to accomplish at this point? He has done everything and is one of the greatest players of all time. Playing more years is not going to change what he is at this point.

Good on him.

IIRC, back in 2014, Dallas was trying to trade up to get Donald, but couldn't do it. They got a good consolation prize in OG Z.Martin though.

Donald was hinting at retirement for the past few offseasons, right?

As for his draft assessment, he was a first round pick, 13th overall, so it's not like that was the consensus view on him by any means.

Donald was the rare example though of a really undersized DT who becomes a big star in the pros. Most of the undersized guys struggle to make it in the league, and nearly every year there is a supposed new Aaron Donald type DT who comes out and doesn't compare in the end.

Outside of his extreme strength, it is his mastery of the cross-chop. Every line player should make adding that to their arsenal mandatory learning.
