Tom Brady: No Worse Than Joe Montana
by Robert William Jones 4d ago

Unfortunately, it’s the truth.

The NFL orientated media has been ripened this week with the news that Tom Brady is likely to have been involved with the whole ball deflating issue during last season’s AFC Championship game against the Colts. The New York Post claims the NFL has the quarterback “by the balls”, Browns coach Mike Pettine says he’s lost respect for him, while our very own Colin Kaepernick insists,

No football in the world is going to help you win by 38! Let it go and let Tom be great! On to the 2015 season #7tormsComing

Everyone has an opinion on it. But let’s think for a moment, what is the actual severity of it all?

The Patriots are a passing team, there’s no doubt on that. We’re told that letting some air out of a football does two things that provide big help to that strategy on a rainy day somewhere near Boston – it helps the quarterback pass it, and it helps the receivers catch it. And this is where Joe Montana and Jerry Rice come into the debate.

Now that Tom Brady has four Super Bowls on his side there’s a more legitimate debate on whether him or Joe Montana can claim the title of Greatest QB of All Time. The pro-Montana camp would most likely say that it must be Joe, because Brady isn’t pure enough to be considered something to that weight, he’s been proven to have found an unfair advantage one too many times. The Brady bunch on the other hand would refute that, saying every team employs minor cheats such as this one and that even if they didn’t, the Patriots won decisively enough on the day for it not to matter.

But if we’re honest, in the case of Montana vs. Brady, none of those arguments really matter, because they’ve both benefitted from the same (unfair?) advantage.

Recently, Jerry Rice, widely believed to be the number one receiver in NFL’s history, admitted to a similar cheat of his own. He used to spray “stickum” on his hands before games in order to give himself more grip on the ball. As in the case of Brady’s soft balls, let’s take a moment to think about what that actually means. Okay, yeah, it’s fairly obvious. Jerry got to catch the ball with slightly more ease than he would have on a pair of hands without the stuff.

So it essentially boils down to this. Montana and Brady both had a bit of edge when it came to the ball being caught. Or did they?

Let’s also take that into account. When Rice admitted to cheating it was hard to believe. We all expected him to come out and tell us that actually he wasn’t being overly serious. That what was intended was actually an ill-taken joke. But he didn’t do that. He claimed that everyone else did it too. Of course, Patriots fans have been claiming this since the whole Spygate incident, but it’s a lot more believable when it comes from the mouth of a pro.

Brady hasn’t said much on the matter of deflating his balls, but that defense has been thrown around on social media by what are being called Patriots sympathizers. Maybe it’s true, maybe everyone does bend the rules when it comes to the NFL’s PSI regulations. Aaron Rodgers has (apparently) admitted to it.

So, now there’s three possible camps;

  1. Montana is the best because he himself didn’t cheat, only his receiver did.
  2. Either man is the best because everyone does it and it’s not a big deal.
  3. Neither man is the best because they both cheated and we should perhaps concentrate the argument on someone more worthy.
But that is where the debate becomes the most interesting of all. Who is more worthy?

Let’s separate the elite few who’ve won four Super Bowls. So, these two and theSteelers’ Terry Bradshaw. By default that makes the Pittsburgh guy the best ever, right? Wrong.

Bradshaw recently said he got a kick out of seeing Brady and Bill Belichick squirm in the fallout of this whole debacle. But in 2008 he admitted himself that used steroids during the 70s. There’s an argument to be made here that because it was the 70s it’s not big deal, and because it was the culture at the time there’s no judgement to be made from that. And that’s a totally fair argument to make, it probably isn’t a big deal in retrospect.

If that is the case, and that steroids being the culture of sports negates Bradshaw’s responsibility for cheating, then it’s only fair to look at all three of these elite quaterbacks in the same way. Bradshaw cheated because the way he cheated was commonplace at the time. Montana cheated because the way his receiver cheated was commonplace at the time. So what about Tom Brady?

Terry Bradshaw himself wrote that the doctoring of balls was something that just happened up until fairly recently, but fans simply didn’t hear anything of it. Why? Because, like the case of steroids and stickum, it wasn’t a big deal.

Therefore, what Tom Brady did was at least commonplace at some point in the very recent history of the game, and all three men to reach four rings have effectively cheated to remain on a level playing field. Cheating, at least in these instances, is something which just cannot separate them in any way.

Unfortunately, everybody cheats.

Oh neat. The daily deflection thread is in well before lunch today.

Kind of disappointed there is no poll though, or is that still forthcoming?
