Three days to the August trade deadline. How likely is it that the Giants trade McCutchen?

If they don’t trade him, I will be upset.

I understand it is a business. I understand they are very image-conscious.

But sometimes I want them to make baseball moves instead of financial moves. And keeping Cutch is nothing but a financial move.

Not following that last thought. They'd be saving money (and maybe picking up a prospect) by dealing Cutch.

Ahmed asks a good question, but rests on a premise: that ERA tells the whole story about pitching.

He hasn't mentioned BS, WHIP, or ERA+. All of those would paint a more complete picture.

To answer his question: with a healthy JC, I suspect we'd be right in the race.

Keeping him keeps the turnstiles moving, thus a financial move. Trading him sends the message that we ain’t competing, so you might as well stay home.

Wouldn’t they be saying the same thing shutting Buster down? He plays Friday night, they lose and on Saturday they have surgery scheduled. Unless that was the plan all along and no one knew about it.

They had a pretty good cover story for Posey though. "We have to act now so he is ready for Opening Day 2019." McCutchen is a pure "we've given up officially on contending" move.

Outside of keeping the Fanny’s in the seats, I don’t see any logic in not trading Cutch. Even giving him away for free is better than keeping him. That opens up ABs for Slater and/or Shaw.

This is what he could have been all year if he didn't get hurt :tsk:

He's right in his prime.
Not that you can put too much stock in ST...

But he was looking FILTHY in ST before the come-backer...

So @tzill you have posted we can contend next year. The pitching can reasonably be expected to be there, assuming some good fortune (which is always needed to contend). We have 5 starters already and could maybe get another. We have a decent pen.

Without using 'that word' there HAS TO be some major improvements in the hitting, specifically some reliable power. We can't run the same lineup back and expect to contend. We can't say 'oh Duggar and Slater and Hanson will be enough, plus Mac will hit 35 HRs'. So what moves do you think they need to make?

There are no impact FA bats available except Machado and Harper and we aren't getting either. What's your plan?
