Snark aside, that's the point. If your view is that "well, it's all a crapshoot anyway" then I can't argue with you. However, that's not the way I look at it. A lot of luck to win a 'ship for sure, but I'm a big believer in advantageous seeding.
Another thing to push for the NL west crown, no more MadBum to guarantee us an in.

Saw a stat yesterday that in terms of ERA+ for a season, Gausman' 2021 is #2 for the Giants all time. Any guesses for who is #1?

All I know is we are playoff bound and we'll either get lucky like we did in 2010, 2012, and 2014 or unlucky like 2016. That's life as a baseball fan.
Have to say this is pretty much what I think. Fir me this year is a gift. I never expected them to compete. BRIB is almost impossible to fathom. But, a lot of things went in our direction ... career years for people I thought had the best behind them. A SP rotation that was crazy good in the 1st half. OK now but not what they were before. A bullpen that seems to have found themselves. From a major weakness to a major strength.

Could we have used another SP and a closer. Sure but that didn't happen so we roll the dice and see what happens. I also agree with MSG about McGee ... he has one pitch and only one pitch. Not sure that will work in the playoffs. But that's all we have. Then as CAL said ... we did win our series with LA, MIL and the Astros. They are playoff teams. We are that good. I'm not sure we dominated them though. All games were close and could have gone in either direction. But we did win the series.

The next 49 games will give us a good insight into what to expect ... if someone told me that the Giants had a chance of winning 100 games this year. I would have thought they were delusional.....

Without looking it up, and ignoring the all time greats of Marichel or Mathewson…

I would guess Vogelsong? Timmeh? Swift?

Great guesses.

#1 is Schmidt in 2003
#2 Gaus
the next eight were mostly Timmah and Marichal. One Cain.

Vogey not even in top 10? I have a hard time believing that. That was an all-time season.

He had an ERA+ of 129.

Not as high as I would have thought, but still good.

By comparison, though, Timmeh has a 168 and a 171 in his CY seasons…

I did a quick and dirty search; couldn't find the list I saw a couple days ago.

This may not be 100% accurate, but probably close.

For SF, ERA+ top 10:

1. Schmidt 180 2003
2. Gausman 179 2021
3. Timmy 171 2009
4. Marichal 169 1965
5. Timmy 168 2008
6. Marichal 168 1969
7. Maricahl 167 1966
8. Swift 161 1992
9. Knepper 151 1981
10. Garrelts 148 1989

Hon Mention: Cain 147 (09); Bum 146 (16); Cueto 144 (16); Vida 140 (81)

Interesting that the 19th century guys are both in the HOF, along with Matthewson and Hubbel.

Schmitty the best ERA+ not in.
If Schmidt were to grow this mustache…

He would be in the HOF as well…

Buster Posey is the first Giants player to have a 4-fWAR season since 2017 (also Posey). He has 297 plate appearances.
