Uh you just posted he is the 2nd highest pitcher on the team in fWAR. It’s Roupp too. Still pretty early

Yeah, I can't reconcile the two stats. He's definitely #weaklink

Giants fWAR leaders

Position players

Jung Hoo Lee: 1.5 fWAR
Matt Chapman: 1.3 fWAR
Mike Yastrzemski: 0.8 fWAR

Pitchers
Logan Webb: 1.8 fWAR (tied for the lead among MLB pitchers)
Jordan Hicks: 0.6 fWAR
Randy Rodríguez: 0.5 fWAR
Weird that both Hicks and Rodriguez are better than Ray and Verlander.

It's subject to SSS noise for sure.
It gets more accurate with larger samples, but it doesn’t take into account human parts of the game. For example, a pitcher staying in a game for an extra inning to give his bullpen rest in a game he could ask out of. Or a player playing injured to try and help the team win if they don’t have a suitable backup. A guy putting down a bunt so the next guy can get the hit, etc.

sure, but all that tends to even out over the long run. Same pitcher leaves them loaded and the reliever gets out of it with no runs scored; opposing player playing hurt for the same reason; a guy screwing up a bunt, etc...

If it’s all random yes. But some players are very selfish. And some players are very unselfish. It also doesn’t take into account when you have team first guys how they tend to fight for each other…or the negative effects of non team players. I think it’s a very useful stat for sure, but it ain’t close to an end all be all imhumbleo.

For example, does WAR take into account how much of a prima donna Rafael Devers looks like right now?

lol, no. And also in the situation of the player playing hurt. He tanks his win war much more when he plays 10 games hurt (or whatever), than if he plays against a player that plays hurt for 10 games too.
