In today’s three true outcome game, does defense make a difference anymore? Sure, it LOOKS bad and detracts from the enjoyment of the game, but is that just fighting windmills?

For whatever reason .. mittfuckery has a different fan optic than moundshattery. As a fan I rarely remember fielding errors unless they are late in the game and are pivoital to the outcome.
On the other hand .... mound shattery by a late inning reliever or a closer is like a gut punch. It takes all the wind out of a fan. Grabbing a 6-5 lead in the eight and seeing it lost is a real shattery fan feeling ... it just sucks ... and it has happened quite a few times this year. .

I think that is probably you. Or maybe the converse is just me, who knows. But I am much more demoralized by errors, or non-error errors than I am by a solid base hit given up or a home run. I guess I feel that a pitcher giving up a HR is just going to happen. After all, the guy who hit the HR is probably getting paid more than the guy who threw the ball. But an error is just a dude doing his job badly. Sure, there is a level of “it happens”, but it is still just a bad show of skill (or lack thereof).
